Occidental Isla Cristina

I would like to give this hotel more stars as it is clean, good value, and has a great location. Had a high room facing the street and the park across the road which was very nice with lovely soft pillows. There are two pools and all the facilities you could want. The buffet food is generally good and although the pasta was not really hot there were plenty of other choices, so easy to avoid. I was surprised that the hotel seemed very full out of season and meal times were crowded. The big drawback is the loud ”entertainment” . This occurred every night and days as well, and there was no getting away from it in the hotel. The music and shouting through loudspeakers varied from mildly annoying to ear shattering. Even the Higuerita bar, furthest from the loudspeakers, was still noisy. At times it sounded as if a drug induced rave was going on! I was glad to be in a room facing away from the pool. Being on all inclusive it was very annoying not to be able to enjoy a quiet drink anywhere in the hotel. The location is great. Step outside the hotel on the beach side and you have peace and quiet, a lovely beach with boardwalks and lots of wading birds at low tide. Further away through town and across the bridge giving entry to the ”island” is a Paraje Natural (nature park) of extensive mudflats and saltpans with many birds such as flamingos, spoonbills, storks and waders. . Further still you come to the Via Verde (green way) - a lovely peaceful trail which goes for many miles through the countryside. This is only a few miles away and easily reached by taxi or bike. It is possible to hire bikes from the hotel for 15 euros per day and there is a great network of flat cycle paths both within the town and along the main road out of town. Be careful to check the bike however as the first one I took had a fault and had to be exchanged before I'd gone half a mile. I was a Saga customer and the rep Chris was very helpful. Booked a trip to Seville which is well worth it. Note that if you do not go on the guided tour you get a price reduction and can have six hours there on your own. The Plaza de Espana is a must see! All in all a good location and a nice hotel apart from the noise.

Melia Isla Canela

Costa Occidental|1.87km Entfernung von isla cristina market
We booked with TUI and arrived into Faro flying with EasyJet from Bristol. We attended the TUI rep who advised us that a taxi would be arriving shortly to take us to the hotel. After a very pleasant 50 minute transfer with a very informative driver we arrived at the hotel. Reception check in was fairly speedy as there were only the two of us arriving at that time. Went to our room 1052 which was a superior double. I felt it was a bit compact, but very clean and tidy with lovely bedding. Not much of a view from the very small balcony though and overlooked the main entrance to the hotel. After two days we had an issue with our room as the shower flooded. This was dealt with promptly with a room change, thanks to Carlos. We went down the the main restaurant for our meal, we had booked all inclusive. Food was quite varied with lots to choose from. The seating area was quite spacious and was easy to find a table. We were asked what we’d like to drink, so we had a glass of white wine and a glass of red. These wines were fairly good, better than some AI hotels we’ve stayed at. As I said the food was more than enough to choose from. Generally had a roast of some kind - one night it was a roasted tuna which was delicious. Plenty of salad items as well. You could also have slices of pizza, frankfurters or burgers with chips. Loads of fruits and some really nice cakes too. Breakfast the following morning was lovely, with omelettes made for you and fried eggs. There may have been scrambled too. They had some sort of bacon and the small Spanish sausages, baked beans were also available. Lots of yoghurts, cereals etc to choose from. However it was a help yourself coffee machine. It was ok, and we didn’t notice queuing for them either. Oh, and they had cava which was help yourself. The pool area had ample sun-beds dotted around, although the pool seemed cold. It was very sunny and warm during our stay, so perhaps that’s why we found the pool refreshing. There was a bar at the poolside serving drinks, which included cocktails and smoothies, plus your usual beer and soft drinks. There was also a snack bar there as well if you didn’t fancy going to the main restaurant for your lunch. There was daily yoga, aqua fitness, spinning, plus aqua bikes as well. All looked good fun. The evening entertainment was ok. One night there was a singing DJ around the pool which was quite good. On another night there was another poolside show, also good. Singers in the main atrium were ok. The main lobby area had a bar as well if you didn’t want the shows. Outside the hotel you can walk to the right all the way along a quiet paseo. There seemed to be only around four hotels in this area as it was mainly very nice apartment complexes. There was a nearby harbour to the left where you could get on a little water taxi to Isla Cristina. You could also walk to the little fishing village where there seemed to be quite a few little bars, which I imagine would open in the evening.
