Hotel Berner Zell am See

We recently stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. When you enter , the lobby area is nice . And that’s about it. The room we stayed in was dated and the carpet was full of stains. In a 4 star hotel the standards for cleanliness should be higher. We had the most unpleasant experience for 2 days at breakfast. We walked in the restaurant and waited to be seated. The majority of tables were nicely done . The hostess had a hard time locating our name on the guests lists and when she was able to confirm we had the breakfast included in our stay she led us to a table that needed to be done. Ok, no big deal we thought. It’s the 1st day and they were not prepared for us. But unfortunately this happened again on the 2nd day. No table ready for us! We felt treated like 2nd class citizens. We are well travelled and this is by far one of the most disappointing stay we ever had. Not a single time we heard an apology.

This is a wonderful hotel with friendly staff, very good food, comfortable rooms. Will go again. Very good indeed being quiet and close to a ski lift operating in summer taking you to exquisite high alpine pastures. Loads of things to do and places to go. The area bus/ski pass is free and saves lots

We stayed in Room 408 at Hotel Berner for a week in June. We arrived late in the evening after dinner time was over. Herr Christoph Berner met us outside the front door and carried our luggage to our room while we are politely led to our dinner table so that we could have our dinner first. From the very start, everyone at the hotel was courteous and pleasant, and it enhanced our stay immensely. You are allocated a table in the restaurant which has your room number and name on it for the duration of your stay. So you know exactly where you are siting for your meals. At the breakfast time, you choose your dinner options which include a soup, starter, buffet salad bar, mains, desert, and cheese board. We are pescatarian and there were plenty of vegetarian and fish options in the menu. The owners made sure we had a vegetarian soup option every night. The quality and presentation of food was excellent. The room was great in size and amenities, with a mini-bar and tea/coffee making facilities, and we could see the lake Zeller from our balcony. The room was cleaned on a daily basis. Although we didn't use the facilities, there is a very nice spa and outdoor pool on the first floor which appeared very clean and well maintained. There are cakes in the afternoon for a couple of hours though we didn't get a chance to taste them as there was so much to do outside. Zell am See and Kaprun have excellent hiking paths and we tried to stay as much outside as we could. The reception staff and Christoph were always around to offer guidance about places to visit and hiking paths, and the morning menu at the breakfast table always had an excursion suggestion with expected weather for the day. The hotel is located 5 minutes from the city centre and less than 10 minutes from the lake, with the bus terminus only 2-3 minutes away. It is a great location and we had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Hotel Berner. We hope to be back soon.

I cannot think of any negative comments about the Berner Hotel. We have just returned and loved the whole experience, from being greeted with a welcome drink to our luggage being whisked up to our room. The staff were, without exception, friendly and kind and extremely hard working, especially Nadya and Sarah who ran the dining room, the bar and the afternoon cakes with efficiency and always a smile and a greeting for all guests. Our room was large with a partial lake view and a lovely balcony. The hotel is in a great location and so quiet and peaceful, especially at night. We were wakened one morning by the sound of cow bells and looked out of our window to see a herd of cows in the field in front! We appreciated the robes and slippers provided and the comfort of the room. The shower had good pressure, the wardrobe was large with lots of coathangers, nice toiletries were provided, as was a good hairdryer. The star of the show however, was dinner. You chose from a menu each morning at breakfast and we would say that the standard of the food was quite exceptional. We absolutely loved dinner and think that the hotel has a very good chef. The Berner family were usually on hand and made a point of speaking with the guests whenever possible. It’s a very well run and exceptionally clean hotel. We didn’t use the spa facilities but had a look around and it was lovely. The swimming pool had plenty of loungers, towels were provided and again the whole area was kept very tidy. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and hope to return next year. Try it, I’m sure you will love it too.

We chose this hotel largely because of the previous good reviews and we are so pleased we did. As our taxi dropped us at the door we were warmly welcomed by Karin, a member of the truly amazing Berner hotel team who lead us inside. Having arrived before the normal check in time we, and the other new arrivals were seated in the comfortable reception area and offered Prosecco, beer, coffee, tea or a soft drink. Minutes later, with our luggage having already been taken up to our room, Karin took us to our room. We'd upgraded to a larger room which as well as two very comfy twin beds (if you like Tempura type mattresses) alongside each other had a settee, arm chair, good sized desk area and a further chair, bathroom with a shower over the bath and a separate WC, with lots of extra space, all opening on to a balcony with a table and chairs where we could sit and enjoy the view of the Zell am See lake and the snow-capped mountains beyond. Throughout our 2 week stay the staff couldn't have been more cheerful, friendly and helpful. We were booked for breakfast and dinner. Breakfasts included a selection of cold meats and cheeses, tomatoes, peppers, boiled eggs plus hot bacon, sausages and scrambled eggs and a variety of breads and cakes. Dinners were 6 courses - soup, a choice of 2 starters, a salad buffet, a choice of 3 main courses, a choice of 2 desserts and cheese and biscuits and the starter, main course and dessert were all beautifully presented. I often find outdoor swimming pools too cold for me to swim in comfort but the water in this hotel pool was heated to just the right temperature i.e. warm enough for me and cool enough for my husband! It was a good size and with most people out walking during the earlier part of the day it was often possible to find time to have the pool to oneself. It had something too I have never come across before - a jacuzzi and massage jets all within the pool and operated by switches on the edge of the pool. The hotel is located a very short walk from the centre of Zell am See which means it is a very peaceful location (much appreciated when there was a Vespa scooter world rally in the centre of the town on one of the weekends of our stay). However the one drawback of this location is that it is up a slight hill which when it reaches the grounds of the hotel turns into a steep incline. This wouldn't be a problem for a fit person but anyone with breathing problems did need to take a few pauses to complete the journey. I was one such person but felt all the pluses of the hotel made this slight difficulty well worthwhile! Zell am See itself is very central for lots of things to see and walks to go on, with many nearby cable cars to take you high up into the mountains and there are various activities on the lake itself. Just returned from a wonderful week spent at Hotel Berner, Zell am See. We were made very welcome by all staff, who were always happy to help with tips on excursions and any help you required to make the best of your holiday. We had a lovely huge room which was cleaned to an extremely high standard every day. Lovely reception area where we enjoyed a complementary drink during check in on our arrival. Large choice of breakfast options. 5/6 course dinner every evening from 6.30 to 8.00pm with the menu being given to you at breakfast for you to select your choices for that evening. Pool area perfect with comfortable sun loungers. Hotel situation is ideal with just a short 5 minute walk down to the lake. We are not skiers but thoroughly enjoyed the cable car trips to the mountains to enjoy the amazing scenery. Would highly recommend this beautiful hotel.

Actually visited September 2022 but the option was not there to add that date. The hotel location is on the edge of the town with mountain views to the one side. The outdoor pool and spa area was very relaxing. The host and all the staff were all very welcoming and we chose this hotel because it came with a pass to local transport and ski lifts which proved to be a great saver and made our vacation. The food was faultless 5 course every day with afternoon cakes and drinks if you wanted them. I would definitely stay here again. Our break was end of summer and the weather was great for walking in the mountains in a shorts and tee shirt.
