Eastwood Lodge

We have lived in Norfolk and Suffolk and so know how artificially expensive Southwold and the area can be. Eastwood Lodge is a great value for money option if you’d like to stay near Southwold. It is a little out of walberswick on a road with no path or lights but we drove there about 3-5 mins for food in the Bell. Eastwood Lodge was warm and comfortable. It had everything we needed for a couple of days stay with our dog in the local area. The communication prior to check in was detailed and effective. Breakfast was provided in the room , was well considered and there was a variety of options available. This is not a luxury option - but the price reflects this. It is however well managed, well thought through and well provisioned. A great place to stay with your pooch 🐶 with lots of country walks and dog friendly establishments around

I felt that the property is dated and needs upgrading, the listing is misleading, breakfast included was a packet of crumpets and something in a plastic small tub like margarine and an out of date yogurt, I’d walked 20 miles that day and had no food or car so I booked for what I was hoping a decent coffee and a croissant at least. At £75 it wasn’t cheap and my most expensive stay, I met no one and had no personal contact and a generic check in message. I stay in a lot of places all over and this is overpriced and oversold!

On the plus side the room was big and clean and that’s it! On the negative side I found it impossible to get in using the keypad but there is an emergency phone number on the door, emergency? So why weren’t my calls answered at 10.00pm. I banged on the door to no avail then found a big stone and knocked with that, fortunately there was someone in there who opened the door for me. The bed was comfortable, the breakfast was awful. Sliced bread, instant flavoured porridge , margarine, ugh! and cheap jam in plastic pots and flavoured sweetened yogurt,everything except the orange juice and milk full of additives. I wanted to take a shower but it was chilly. There was a heater but the only socket that I could find was too far away to be of any use. There was a good tv. Never again!

Perfect little bolt hole. I thought I was staying in Reydon but the description, but it’s a little further out. No issue with that though.

Lovely stay in a delightful area. Everything as described. What more can you asked for?

Arrival at this accommodation is a bit like a board game, code for front door entry, code box with key for room entry. Game continues with having to play with sink taps before getting hot water in shower. It hails it’s isolated and that is certainly true but nothing to enjoy in area outside of a few very dirty garden chairs. Its decor is very dated but functional aside from TV which was not working because of aerial problem that was days away from being fixed. An adequate continental breakfast is provided, but honestly that is the only positive! We booked and paid for two nights but moved to a local hotel for our second night.

Eastwood Lodge It can only be described as basic but clean. There was a plethora of notices in several places about turning off lights and leaving the room key; these could have been replaced by one laminated sheet. The television was not working, we suspected for a while, but thankfully the wifi was. The beds were comfortable enough. The breakfast was not continental as described; where were the cheeses and cold meats? There was porridge and cornflakes, but no fruit or yoghurt. Brown bread which when toasted was like co**** sand, a small tub of margarine, marmalade and jam; as the trouble had been taken to put the margarine in a plastic tub, why not do the same with decent jam and marmalade instead of ‘plastic mini pots’, the sort provided in service stations etc? There was instant coffee, sugar and tea bags, milk and orange juice. A coffee machine was advertised but only a cafetiere and no ground coffee. There was a toaster and a microwave. To us this seemed like a place for walkers who would want a hearty breakfast to set them up for the day, not a minimalist apology. Fortunately I had taken my own towels, 2 small thin bath towels were provided but no bath mat. The bathroom door would not shut, it swung open all the time into the kitchen, dining area which was unpleasant. There was no cooker as shown in the pictures!

The Lodge is fantastic value for money, ideally situated a mile out of Walberswick and with lovely walks from the door. The hosts have thought of everything, with a generous breakfast in the fridge and comfortable furnishings. We thought it would be very basic and just somewhere to sleep but discovered it was nice enough to spend time here, sitting in the garden. Thoroughly recommend!
