The Flying Trout Boutique Lodge

There are few places we've visited during our travels with family that we would say justify a small expedition to get to. This charming bed and breakfast squarely fits that category. It's impossible to overstate how perfectly this place defines old fashioned, charming hospitality! The hosts' attention to detail and focus on quality of service are truly remarkable and world class. The Kiwi King Suite has a very large and delicious jacuzzi with an amazing view of Taupo Lake. The Tui King Suite is located upstairs, so has an even better view of Taupo Lake and a gorgeous and spacious balcony. It's actually fun to come with family and book both of those rooms. Breakfast here is another major highlight. Eggs scrambled to perfection, super fresh fruit, all served by the most attentive hosts. The place is kept sparklingly clean, which really makes a huge difference. It's one of these instances where even though we're huge fans of contemporary modern interior design, it felt absolutely amazing to be in a more old school home.

Awesome awesome stay. private amazing room with amazing view and spa pool. Breakfasts were incredible, make sure you ask for the omelette, (or scrambled eggs) it is their specialty :-) Very helpful with advice and nothing was too much trouble for them. Would definitely stay again

The Flying Trout Boutique Lodge is a wonderful location and great facilities with the most accommodating and helpful hosts. A fantastic base from which to explore the Taupo Region. We had nothing more to wish for, it was perfect, thank you.

When you travel you hope that a B&B is good….FLYING TROUT far exceeded just good. A very comfortable bed, spacious rooms , and hospitality that will not easily be matched. Located in central North Island it isa perfect base from which you can explore…or do nothing. Karen and Robert our hosts are thoughtful and caring.

The property is amazing. From the warm welcome from Rob & Karen to the attention to detail in the way they host their guests. The room we were allocated was comfortable and cosy and the decor was perfect. I could have easily have just stayed snuggled in the property with a book and a glass of wine without leaving. The breakfasts were freshly cooked and delicious. I completely recommend The Flying Trout.

We spent three nights at this great B and B. Spacious accommodations, very friendly hosts, very accommodating with our early morning departure (early breakfast), and great views from balcony! The location is perfect as it is away from the crowded town of Taupo.

What a great place to stop. We are not really B and B people but having this place to settle into our NZ adventure was perfect. The Kiwi suite was perfect with everything you need and plenty of space for us to organize all our stuff. Lots of small touches and details accounted for. Our hosts were so kind and accommodating on every request. We were staying in the area to do the Tongariro Crossing (amazing) and they arranged for us to have a take away breakfast at 6:30 so we could hit the road. The next morning we had more time and the made to order Brekkie was delicious. The room, the property, the views…tremendous. Stay here!

Our stay at the Flying Trout was wonderful. Rob and Karen are fabulous hosts, who greeted us warmly and gave us the tour of the property, and we instantly felt at home. Their home was warm, and beautifully decorated. The views of the lake and surrounding area were spectacular, from every vantage point. We were offered a complimentary bottle of wine, of our choosing when we were having the tour. There was a billiard room and bar. The room we stayed in was bright and very spacious with a huge dressing room and an even bigger bathroom with a spa bath - again with views of the lake. The bed was comfy, and warm. The basket of chocolates were a very nice touch, along with the chocolate bar on the bed. The room had it's own bench and sink, fully appointed with tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was included in our stay. Continental followed by a cooked breakfast. We both chose the Big Breakfast. It should have been called the huge breakfast! It was delicious and after consuming the continental breakfast first, I wasn't able to do the cooked breakfast justice. The next morning, I skipped the continental and Karen made a smaller plate of the cooked breakfast for me. Still delicious, and I managed to finish it all this time! Sorry Bessy (dog) no leftovers for you that day. Rob and Karen had great tips on places to visit and eat, and gave us a printed sheet with directions on how to travel home via a different, much more scenic route. We will definitely stay again, and highly recommend this lodge.
