We've just wrapped up our third visit to Barcelo Rivera Maya, choosing the Tropical this time after two previous stays at the Palace. The location is ideal, with the Tropical being conveniently close to the mall, gym, and spa complex—all within walking distance.
While the food quality at the Tropical may not match the Palace's standard, it's still satisfactory. The pools are enjoyable, and what truly stands out is the exceptional attentiveness of the staff, perhaps even more so than our experiences at the Palace.
Considering its budget-friendly nature, Barcelo Rivera Maya Tropical offers a great value for families or couples, providing plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. We would certainly consider returning for another enjoyable stay.

The customer service was very poor at check in and checkout. Customer service at the whole resort was laking mostly at pools and room cleaning. Drink service at pool took 20 mins to get a drink and at busy times would close bar at one side and push to one bartnender. Food was subpar for breakfast and lunch. Best part of resort is the beach.

All is good but there is major drawback and because of that reason we will not go back to this place.
if you lost your wrist band then the resort will charge $500 to give new one.
if the kids lost it then also $500. so all the time you are caring about wrist band , just do not enjoy in ocean just take care of Wrist band.

This is the most uncomfortable room I have stayed, I did ask changing room but not much improvement . The beds are so humid you feel like sleeping in a wet bath tub every night. Not recommended

Absolutely beautiful resort! Very well taken care of and clean. Staff were very accommodating, we had an issue in our room (fan and ac issues) and they had someone in super quick and resolved the issues. Lots of activities in the resort to keep you busy or many locations for you to be able to sit/lay and relax. Highly recommend this resort!

Hotel has multipal hotels, all of them beach front. Long beach, walking distance between buildings. Big territory gives enouth space for privacy, green nature with grass outside the balcony with exotic birds and small animals. Clean spacious rooms, huge swimming pools, big beach. Restaurants are big and many, no waiting lines. Also restaurants at the beach for lunch and snack with beautiful sea view. Stuff is friendly and fast. Everything was amasing!!!

This place is not very accommodating for large groups. It is impossible if you want to stay in the same hotel or dine together. We arrived on a Sunday and could not book a restaurant for the large group (14) at all or for our family of 4 (anytime before 8pm). They have a lot of rules and stipulations on who can dine where and blocked off spots depending on where you are staying and premium or not premium. Didn’t feel like arguing so it wouldn’t ruin my trip anymore, so we literally ate buffet for food 3 meals a day for 6 days! Ugh!!
Even if you book at a specific hotel, note it is not guaranteed and they don’t tell you that until you show up with your luggage - so be prepared so waste time walking or waiting for their bus to go check in somewhere else.
Overall, large resort with plenty of spots to enjoy the pool & beach and lots of buffets, shops, entertainment- but would not go back as it’s extremely frustrating if you have to deal with their staff.
