Vorab ein Wort zum Hotel-Management: Nachdem wir unseren Aufenthalt, nur einen Tag vor Reiseantritt, wegen Krankheit absagen mussten, wurde sehr schnell ein neuer Termin gefunden und so konnten wir, nur 4 Wochen später, doch noch unseren Urlaub im Zanzibar Retreat Hotel genießen. Danke, Maria, Mats und Jan für euren Einsatz und die große Flexibilität. Das Zanzibar Retreat ist ein schickes kleines Hotel, das alles bietet, was man für einen ruhigen Urlaub benötigt. Die überschaubare Menge an Gästen sorgt dafür, dass man zu jeder Zeit einen Platz am Pool, am Strand oder in einer der Hängematten zwischen den Palmen findet. Auch kulinarisch wird man hier bestens versorgt. Zum Frühstück gibt es ein kleines Buffet für Brot, Brotaufstriche, Säfte, Tee und Kaffee. Der Rest wird von der Karte bestellt und wird dann auch schnell serviert. Über den Tag kann man von einer Tageskarte Snacks, verschiedene Burger und Sandwiches bestellen. Jeden Nachmittag wird Kaffee, Tee und Kuchen oder lokales Gebäck angeboten. (Die Kaimati waren unser Highlite!) Auch auf der Karte für den Abend findet sich für jeden Geschmack etwas. Zusätzlich werden jeden Abend zwei Tagesgerichte angeboten. Meistens eines aus der Lokalen Küche und ein Internationales. Serviert wird das alles von außerordentlich freundlichem Personal, das stets alle Gäste im Fokus hat und schnell und zuvorkommend agiert. Dies gilt aber auch für alle anderen Angestellten, denen man in der Anlage begegnet. Khadija, die Chefin in der Küche, hat an einem Vormittag eine Cooking-Claas angeboten, an der wir auch sehr gerne teilgenommen haben. (Spoiler: es ist extrem Lecker was Khadija zaubert) Wir haben uns auch Tagestouren vom Hotel organisieren lassen. Die Angabe von Ziel und Zeitraum genügen und zur gewünschten Uhrzeit steht ein Fahrer bereit. Wir haben uns an jedem einzelnen Tag sehr wohl und aufgehoben gefühlt und zwei unvergessliche Wochen hier verbracht. Eine Rückkehr an diesen schönen Ort ist fest eingeplant.

This is a superb charmy, down-to-earth small hotell with excellent food and the best hosts you can imagine. After a week on safaris it was a true blessing to arrive here with its tranquillity and cues that really knew how to cook. I strongly recommend it to everyone who visits Zanzibar

Great hotel on the beautiful beach of Matemwe in northern Zanzibar. Owners and staff were very friendly and accomodating. But I would really recommend going to this hotel because of the food. delicious! We booked half board and the breakfast menu was amazing. For dinner we had a choice of two main courses and everything was really great. We were also happy with the rooms - we booked the two on the second floor with a beach view and balconies. The beds were good and we got extra pillows and duvets without any delay when we asked for it. The pool is not very large but never crowded since the hotel only has a few rooms. They also hepled us book taxi from and to the airport as well as a full day boat trip of snorkeling. Would defintelty go back again.

If you‘re looking for a peaceful and quiet getaway, that‘s the place where you wanna be. Comfy sunbeds, excellent pool, friendly and attentive staff and a super delicious restaurant. Prices for a resort reasonable, sure at local places it‘s cheaper but the quality of the food you get is outstanding. Very good breakfast aswell as the swedish fika at 4pm. All wishes were fulfilled without any complaint. We had a wonderfull stay, thank you so much!

We had booked this little hotel for six nights, but as soon as we stepped into the veranda/bar/restaurant we felt that we could stay forever...so booked another six nights directly, without even seeing our room. But we did not regret it!. This is a a hotel with all small details that makes you feel at home; for example a beach basket with towels and sun hats in every room. And as a Swedish person I loved the 'fika' every afternoon at 4 o'clock :-)
Finally - the food...was delicious! I don't remember how many times I had the mango/avocado/shrimp salad or the tuna steak.
If you are out for a cosy small hotel (only 14 rooms I think), on a fantastic beach, just book!

Quiet and super comfortable, this was my third time staying here, each stay the service is excellent, staff friendly and attentive. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable and the pool inviting. Chefs were great, breakfast lunch and dinner all were super. Highly recommended stop in Matemwe.

My husband and I spent a few days on the Matemwe side of Zanzibar to do some diving. We chose this hotel because of its proximity to the dive shop and are so glad we did! The owners were very sweet and the staff were so helpful and accommodating. The owner even kindly allowed us a (very) late check-out our final day to account for our final dive. I would highly recommend this location as a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the activities the eastern side of the island has to offer!
