Zum zweiten Mal habe ich das Nagano Tokyu REI gewählt. Das Hotel liegt direkt gegenüber dem Bahnhof Nagano, was sehr praktisch für Busse nach Hakuba und Togakushi ist. Restaurants und Einkaufsmöglichkeiten sind fußläufig erreichbar. Das Frühstück bietet eine gute Auswahl und schmeckt hervorragend, die Zimmergröße ist angemessen.

The most favorite from this hotel is there’re plenty of amenities – shampoo, conditioner, shower gel from a lot of brands that you can select by yourself at the lobby.

I stayed at this hotel with my wife and two children during a two-night trip to Karuizawa in early February. The hotel is around 100 years old and its claim to fame is that John Lennon has stayed there. The piano that he played on is still in the bar. I was particularly impressed by the breakfast. It was a simple American breakfast very well presented. It was very pleasurable to look out into the inner courtyard with it was snowing. Overall: I like this hotel as it has a lot of character. It is architecturally attractive and has kept a lot of its charm despite renovation. The staff are very professional and polite. I would stay in this hotel again.

I’ve stayed at many ryokans throughout my travels—often making up half of each trip—but this one felt a bit different. It seemed to be run by just one person, who I assume is the owner. Everything was self-service, which might be understandable considering it was the most affordable option among the ryokans in the area. Most amenities required an extra fee, such as towels. Payment was made by dropping coins into a basket and making your own change, which wasn’t very convenient—especially since I didn’t carry much cash. One thing I appreciated was the luggage delivery service. I was able to leave my bag at the lobby before check-out and have it sent to Toyama Station (for about 4,000 JPY, cash only). What stood out was the creativity in the shared spaces. There were several common rooms designed for relaxing and spending time—perfect if you’re traveling with friends. You could play ping pong, read books, watch TV, or use the canteen, which had a microwave and dishes available. They even had coin-operated massage chairs and a small fitness room. However, I must mention two important downsides: 1. Limited nearby dining options – Many restaurants shown as open on Google Maps were actually closed. The only one that was open had extremely slow service—I waited nearly an hour for dinner. 2. Insects—large ones – Unfortunately, I encountered big insects in my room, which made it hard to sleep. (He even provided insect-catch tape for me while introduce the room) I stayed awake most of the night, worrying it might come back—especially stressful since I had to get up early the next morning to catch a bus to Ogizawa. Minds you, stairs only, need to carry your luggage down by yourself. Overall, while it offers good value for the area and has unique communal features, this ryokan may not suit travelers who prefer full service, cashless payment, or guaranteed comfort.

Als wir aus dem Bahnhof kamen, mussten wir daran denken, bei Lawson etwas zu essen zu kaufen. In der Hot Spring Street gibt es keine Lebensmittelgeschäfte! Der private Suppenladen im Laden befindet sich in B1. Er ist relativ einfach, hat viel Feuchtigkeit und ist nicht sehr sauber. Es wird empfohlen, zum öffentlichen Suppenhaus zu gehen. Allerdings sagte der Chef, dass es im öffentlichen Bad keinen Platz zum Baden gibt, man also nur ein eigenes Bad + Dusche kaufen kann, was etwas peinlich ist.

Es gibt begrenzte Einrichtungen bei der Wahl der westlichen Cottage. Der Onsen und der Fitnessraum sind nur bis 19:00, zu denen es oftmals die Zeit ist, dass wir Abendessen haben oder vom Tourismus oder Einkaufen im Hotel ankommen. So konnten wir es nicht am Tag 1 verwenden. Am 2. Tag war es ein Schnellrennen, um einfach wieder zum Hotel zu gehen. 2. Das kleine Haus hat keine AC. Es war heiß, da es schon Mitte Ma ist. We spent 2 nights in Prince after first 2 nights in Kusatsu onsen town. The hotel looked underwhelming on arrival and the front office service was efficient but cursory compared to the warm hospitality we had in the ryokan stay. It was low season and hotel was very quiet and had a ”cold” atmosphere. I was further disappointed when we were shown our room which was on the lowest floor with a simple garden view. On requesting the check-in staff for a change of room on higher floor and a more scenic view, I was told there is an upgrade charge, which I accepted. The new room was the same size and configuration but on a higher floor with a nice view of Mt Asama. While I was happy to pay the fee, I can't help but compare their practice with all the hotels that I have stayed in all these years, where room changes were complimentary so long as the room type remains the same. Nevertheless, the hotel's facilities delighted me immensely and I enjoyed the overall experience. The highlight of the hotel stay was the fantastic view of Asama in a high ceiling dining room with full glass window. We were able to have different table seatings for both morning breakfast as the hotel occupancy was low, which gave us different perspectives of the scenery. The other highlight of the hotel is the onsen facility which is located in a separate building on higher ground, accessible via a self service automated tram. Aside from Asama view in the outdoor onsens, there is a common lounge which has equally awesome view of Asama. We enjoyed our time soaking in onsen and resting in the lounge. Was I would go back to Prince Asama and experience the scenery during a different season!
