Always our go to for a roast dinner and it never fails! The beef is cooked to perfection and the gravy is just delicious! Great service and lovely staff.. All round it's great, we can't fault the place! We'll be back and can't recommended enough!

We chose the Gateway Inn because it looked inviting, was in the right position for an overnight stop on the way to Scotland, and was pet friendly. We were very happy to find it had a homely, welcoming atmosphere on arrival with plenty of parking space. It's located near a large roundabout but is set far enough away from it for that not to have been an issue. It has its own grounds which were handy for our dog. We had 2 rooms, both of which were extremely spacious and well furnished. They each had a different style. Everything was spotless and the bathroom and shower room were of good sizes with plenty of space to put ones own toiletries. The beds were super comfortable. We had a great evening meal and breakfast was continental style and plentiful. Many thanks to the welcoming, efficient staff. We would definitely stay here again.

We recently stayed at The Gateway Inn on our way up to Scotland. On checking in, we were asked if we would like to book a table for dinner, as long as it was an early booking, as they were busy that evening. This we happily accepted, as we preferred to eat early. Off we went for the afternoon to Windermere, passing many eating places, but rushed back to the Inn deliberately, in time for our reservation. On presenting ourselves for dinner, we were bluntly told there was no table booked in, but we could have a table much later. We explained that we had booked a table on arrival that afternoon, having been asked if we would like to eat in their restaurant, and were actually given menus to take up to our room earlier to help us pre decide. We also explained that we only wanted one course for dinner (the sunday roast) and wouldn't be in the restaurant very long. The member of staff said he would go and ask the chef, but returned immediately saying the answer was a resounding 'no'. No consideration was given to the fact that we had prebooked and no apology offered. The only choice was a late table ( not acceptable, as I cannot eat late, due to a medical condition) and as new visitors to The Lake Distirict, we were forced to make our way out again into the wet windy Sunday evening to find dinner. I wouldn'thave minded but we had already been out previously and would have found a restaurant earlier. Would we revisit the Gateway Inn...no. Would we book a table, if asked by the staff if we wanted a reservation? ....definateley not, not unless you triple checked your booking and then triple checked it again!!

We arrived here for Sunday lunch ! A bad mistake . If we hadn't chose the beef ,there was an extra charge of. £ 2.50 for a Yorkshire pudding on chicken or lamb !! Given the cost of. £ 16, 95 for the main course , which consisted of the meat , mashed potatoes , cabbage accompanied by a luke warm jelly gravy . No roast potatoes , cold plates , poor quality , A child's. fish + chips with NO fish content unless paste, greasy, inedible . Drinks on top , premium prics . Tatty surroundings . Our worst Sunday lunch ever . Your only plus is your staff . !!

We have stayed here before on the way up to Scotland and on the return journey, a great place to stay with very comfortable rooms and friendly staff. Great dog friendly environment. The rooms have all been upgraded since our last visit, very comfortable beds and lovely furnishings. We have booked and paid in advance to stay again on both journeys when we travel back up to Scotland for Christmas and the New Year and are looking forward to staying again. We had Dinner on one of the two nights stay and were very pleased with the quality of the food and great choices of drinks. The only criticism and it is only a small point but if you opt for Breakfast there are NO EGGS!!!??? to us a Breakfast is incomplete without eggs, they do not offer them at all and this I feel is poor. The hot breakfast is very good with all ingredients of very good quality and well cooked kept warm on the buffet table but we missed having eggs. When enquring as to the reason why we were told that there was no chef to cook them on the premises which begs the question do the staff cook the Breakfasts and are not confident to cook eggs or does the chef come in early and prepare everything before guests come down in which case the eggs would not survive well under a hot plate? I do hope that the management read our comments and secretly hope that when we return in December there will be eggs available?

Last minute decision to stop over in Kendal on our way to a wedding in Scotland and to break the journey. Lovely country hotel in beautifully kept surroundings. Bedroom was big and warm and the cosiest bed ever . Great wine list and reasonably priced food menu - about 12-26. Monkfish was tasty and a real treat . Just a pity we didn’t have our dog with us as he would have loved it too . We will definitely return will our four legged friend for a longer visit in the summer .

We have just had a lovely stay at the Gateway hotel. The lady Emma was there from beginning to end and made sure our stay was smooth and peaceful. The room was spotless and so comfortable. We had a lovely sleep. Breakfast was lovely lots of choices and check out was easy. Emma is lovely and clearly works hard but makes it look easy. Thanks for a lovely stay we will definitely return. Price was great too.

I needed a place to stay near Kendal whilst visiting the Lakes with my brother. I was initially attracted by the quality of the breakfast according to previous guests. But little did I know, the offering was far more than that. As a solo traveller in need of some sleep, I was pleased to be given Room 6 which resides on the top floor with a couple of other rooms. Room 6 faces the back of the property so is shielded from the noise of the main road…although there wasn’t much noise to be fair. The room was very comfortable, quite cozy but with all the amenities you’d need including some nice complimentary chocolates on the tea tray. The bathroom was big enough and the shower suitably powerful. It was also lovely and warm due to the towel rail. The double bed itself was easily big enough for two (possibly a king) and very comfy with lots of pillows. I slept really well especially as it had been a long day of travel up from London, house hunting and then dinner in Langdale (30 mins away by taxi). The next morning I took breakfast around 9.30am and requested a full English with a coffee. The breakfast was £11 extra but easily worth it. The portion was huge with delicious local ingredients, and there is ample continental to choose from first. I had two coffees because they were so nice. Great service throughout too. I had showed my brother the lunch menu the previous day and we decided to have lunch as it looked really appealing. After all, how often do you get to try Monkfish scampi or Monkfish & Prawn tagliatelle? Everything was presented well and tasted great. And again, brilliant service despite it being super busy for lunch. To work off all the food, we went for a stroll over the fields towards Kendal straight outside the hotel. If it hadn’t been a Sunday we could have visited the farm shop and bakery opposite too. Next time. I can’t fault the gateway inn, and will look to stay here again when I’m back in the area.

After a fantastic day in and around The Lakes, we decided to go for a late lunch. Upon arrival we were seated quickly by a very pleasant gentleman. Our drinks order was taken and they were brought a few minutes later and our food order was taken. After over half an hour we asked how long the service was going to be and had to ask for cutlery as they has no forks washed when we arrived. Our food arrived almost 40 minutes later, which was fine, although they weren't overly busy. I ordered the pork burger with Stilton and my partner ordered the fish and chips. The waitress asked if we would like any sauces, I asked for mayonnaise and she went to kitchen to get some. I then took a bite out of my burger and upon looking as the pork pattie it wasn't cook properly and wasn't even warm. When she brought my mayonnaise it had some how managed to turn into tomato ketchup upon arrival, I told the waitress that the burger wasn't cooked and wasn't even warm, to which she replied, 'Well it was brought to temperature, do you want something else' after the slow initial service, I declined, I really didn't want to have to sit there for another almost 40 minutes. My partner ate his meal and I went to the bar to pay. The waitress and Manager were both behind the bar. The waitress said, I've taken the burger off your bill. I said that I was really disappointed, to which she snapped back at me, Well you only waited 31 minutes. The manager just stood next to her and said nothing, she then said, well someone else ordered the pork burger so I went and asked them if their's was okay and it was and yours was cooked at the same time, so it was fine. Firstly the waitresses rudeness was uncalled for, secondly the customer services is of a negative value and the manager at the very least should have stepped in and offered an apology not only for the poor food but for the rude waitress snapping back at a customer.
