We were recommended to stay in Trastevere rather than Central Rome..and it was the best decision ever. 2nd best decision was to stay at Villa Matissa. Book directly with hotel, rather than via any booking sites, you will get a better service and poss room. Silvio is very good at communicating with you, mainly via Whats App. It's simply stunning, down a quiet street (well very quiet for Rome!), in through a secure gate and surrounded by an oasis like garden to sit in. Silvio is a wonderful guest, really nice guy with excellent English. The house is beautiful and if you can get a room with a view of the garden but all rooms are really lovely. No breakfast inc but many cafes within 5 mins walk. Plus the 75 bus stops right outside the gate, to get you into the central Rome within 15-20 mins at 1.50 euro. Don't be afraid of the buses, they dead easy to use as each stop gives a run down of the stops on the way so you can't get lost. There is also a fridge bar at the villa that you can help yourself to beer, cola, proscecco, and. you just record what you have and pay at the end. I recommend taking ear plugs if you a light sleeper. Yes it's a quiet residential street, but it still gets some noise during the night with sirens, etc. But compared to central Rome, it is quiet. We did the usual sight seeing - be prepared for plenty of walking, even with use of buses! We also did a day trip to Pompeii which we recommend - we booked with a company called Get Your Guide which included high speed train to Napoli, tour bus to Pompeii with a guide in a small group plus lunch and wine tasting at a local vineyard. Great fun! Recommend pre booking all tourist site visits, with skip the line and guide/audio guides inc. Stay away from the cafes/restaurants surrounding the main piazzas...go down side streets to find less tourist places that have better food and service. Silvio will give you some eating recommendations in Trastevere but if you want a fantastic lunch/dinner in central Rome, find the La Buca di Ripetta on Via di Ripetta. Not that cheap but oh my god, it was amazing food! If you're worried about the language, don't be, most places speak English...though it's worth trying out a few Italian phrases at the least. We were lucky enough to be in Rome for their Birthday Celebrations - highlight was a 3 day free spectacle at Circus Maximus with re-enactments of gladiator fights, battles, roman dancing. Was amazing - we went on Sun 23rd April. See pics. Normally Circus Maximus is very disappointing, but this was an amazing 4 hours sat on the hillside watching, all for free. Ended with a massive Barbarians vs Roman legions battle!! In all, an amazing Roman Holiday. PS - Silvio can also arrange a private car to pick up at airport for 60 euro - recommended as you haven't got to fight with taxis as driver meets you in Arrivals and the 6 seater cars are very comfortable with safe drivers! Ciao
