2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.

Es ist zu beachten, dass das Badezimmer dieses jungen Hotels sehr klein ist, in sechs Zimmern geteilt ist, nicht in der Art von Stock, das ist sehr unkomfortabel.

This hostel is set in a treed, green area. Pets are welcome. There is off-street car parking if you need it. There's a bus stop right outside the gate if you need it, but the main city sights are only a 15-20 minute walk away either on a mainish road or along the riverbank - both are interesting in their own way. Staff are friendly, helpful. The kitchen and bedrooms were clean and fresh, the bathrooms and showers were kept clean - every morning fresh. Any mess in those was due to guests, not staff or cleaners. I didn't eat in, I self-catered - but the hostel food looked amazing and I could see it was being served with a smile. They had a bar too. The front desk staff were great, answered all my questions. The kitchen for self-catering was very well equipped, right down to labels and pens so you can mark your stuff and the date you're leaving. As hostel accommodation, this was great. The only downside, which I forgot to mention in my review on the YHA website, is that the floors squeak and the door to the bedroom needs a good hard pull to shut properly this was sometimes disturbing to other people trying to sleep in the room if you needed to get up early in the morning or late at night/during the night.

YHA Whitby's location is stunning - right by the 199 steps, St Mary's Church, the Abbey and with beautiful views across the river and town. It's a beautiful historic building with an absolutely lovely private garden. The table football was also much enjoyed! Abbey entry is free for hostel guests which was a bonus. However, it feels like it is coasting on its location and exterior, and was a disappointment compared with other YHA hostels. Firstly check-in is 3-10pm, despite the YHA website saying it's 24hrs (hopefully they will update this). There's also not a 24hr reception, again contrary to the YHA website. There's a sign directing you to the cafe out of these hours, but it was a big contrast to other hostels where there's usually someone around to ask for info, provide key for the luggage room, answer qs and deal with any issues even if you can't check in yet. Definitely not a warm welcome. The room was decent but the shower leaked all over the floor - a sign said to leave the showerhead pointing down to avoid floods, but the bath tap stuck out so much this meant you couldn't get under it and the mixer tap was awkward. I doubt that any of the management have tried showering in it. The bathroom is looking tired. No binliners in bins, and no storage in rooms either (they have changed completely from the TripAdvisor photos which are from 2016!!) Loud music from the kitchen underneath us at 730am on Monday morning. Overall, the hostel could do with some TLC - and will need it if features like the beautiful conservatory, where grass is now growing through the glass panes, are to last. The cafe is haphazard and the breakfasts a shambles - no trays, cutlery running out, coffee running out, juice running out (and not being speedily replaced as happens elsewhere), bits being left off the toast machine so the toast falls on the floor, etc. They seemed to only cook 4 eggs at a time and have no queuing system so we had to wait a long while for cooked breakfasts while others came straight in and were served immediately. Some staff were friendly but others were completely uninterested. We wanted to mention these issues quietly to reception as we left, but guess what... shutters up again and no one around.

Von der Ankunft / Anreise, bis zum Abreisen waren alle Mitarbeiter ausgezeichnet & v hilfreich. Frühstück war sehr gut mit viel Wahl und das Abendessen, das wir eine Nacht hatten, war hervorragend (10 von 10). Die Zimmer waren gut ausgestattet / geräumig und v sauber. Eine gute Auswahl von Real ale ist verfügbar und als Teil einer Fahrradgruppe wurden unsere Fahrräder in sicherer Lagerung hinterlassen. Ausgezeichnet alle runden. Hoch empfohlen 👍

Wir bleiben in der Regel bei Fairfax oder den Feathers, aber sie wurden vollständig reserviert. Wir haben beschlossen, den Black Swan zu versuchen, wahrscheinlich nicht. Das Hotel ist trotz der jüngsten Renovierung sehr müde - kann ich nicht sehen, wo in den oberen Hallen und Schlafzimmern? Das Zimmer war sehr elementar. Badezimmer müssen aktualisiert werden, und in der Tat Reinigung vor Ankunft der Gäste. Wir waren sehr spät zu checken, trotzdem mussten wir das Badezimmer gereinigt werden, weil es über vergessen war, Haare, alte Wassermarken und Teufelsringe - grau! Obwohl die Dame Mitarbeiter entschuldigt und sehr nett war bei Abendessen und Check-out - ein reales Vermögen im Hotel. Ein Zimmer bug bar für mich war nichts mehr zu hängen, Artikel wie Jacken und Kleider. Der Schrank war nur für Hemden und gefaltete Hosen. Ich musste lange Kleider auf dem Licht anhängen. Auch gibt es keine Rasen-/Tandbürsten-Socke im Badezimmer. So wenige Dinge, die den Aufenthalt einfacher machen würden. Wir hatten Abendessen, das für 'pub grub' nicht schlecht war, aber es war nicht Restaurantqualität so zu sprechen. Ich fügte hinzu, dass die Grau und Sauce mehr wie Wasser in Konsistenz und Geschmack waren. Die Pies waren großartig! Leider konnten wir das Frühstück nicht versuchen (das in unserem Preis enthalten war), da trotz eines Wochenendes keine Zimmer-Service-Optionen und Frühstücksmöglichkeiten nicht vor 9.30am verfügbar sind. So am Sonntag bei 9.41am, mussten wir uns in einen nahe gelegenen Café zu Frühstück übertroffen. Das war sehr irritierend, wie Sie sich vorstellen können! Ich würde nicht empfehlen, hier mit so vielen besseren Optionen lokal zu bleiben. Was ist eine echte Schande, da das Essen so viel besser war und ich hätte nach Renovierungen erwartet, das Hotel hätte eine Verbesserung gesehen. Es hat nicht. Aber wenn Sie nur Pub-Essen wollen und Sie in der Gegend sind, dann vielleicht geben Sie es ein gehen.

Nice little Inn in a pleasant village. On arrival, we found the room to be very clean, but very cold. We had not phoned ahead to advise of arrival time, so this was not unexpected. We soon got the room to temperature with the adequate radiator. There was a good size TV and working remote control. It was nice to have a mirror, often lacking in hotel rooms. However, the bathroom was very cold (in tune with the weather) and although there was a towel radiator, there was no facility to switch it on, so the night visits to the loo and morning showers were fairly grim experiences for a February morning. Breakfast was the most disappointing part of the say. Firstly, there no cereals options. When asked, they said they could find something, but it was an offer of just two uninviting choices. There were no fruit items or yoghurts either, Thankfully I had brought my morning grapefruit with me on the trip, but my wife had nothing. There was no choice of fruit juice, just a half of a small glass of orange juice (already poured), that tasted cheap and oversweet. The cooked breakfast was minimal and the mushrooms were well past their ”eat by date” being dried up, wrinkled and too leathery to consume. When they get to that stage it is best to throw them away and offer an alternative. The negatives override the positives, so we will probably not return.

Ich habe versehentlich für das falsche Hotel versehentlich letzte Minute gebucht, so dass es schön gewesen wäre, wenn sie mir erlaubt hätten, es zu stornieren, aber da sie nicht zulassen, eine Stornierungsgebühr, es hätte bedeuten sollen, dass ich mein Geld für die gesamte Buchung verlieren würde, Daher habe ich sichergestellt, dass ich die Nacht besucht habe
