Tokaanu Lodge Motel

Large rooms in a very traditional Kiwi Motel setting Very clean with every basic requirement Not place for luxury but comfortable beds and good quality linen private hot pools and very helpful hosts. Great location for Taupo mountains and local thermal area.

Stayed here for 2 nights. The lodge was very disappointing. The cupboard doors were all battered, the curtains were missing hooks, there were random dirty patches on the walls and the patio furniture was broken. It needed new furniture and a coat of paint. The gutters were all blocked and dripping onto the decking. The town also seems to have seen better days. There are free thermal pools on site, but they felt dirty and tired. There seemed to be lots of workmen staying on the site and we had to argue with the residents of the next lodge as soon as we arrived as they blocked our car in with one of their vans and we needed to get away early in the morning. Our lodge was next to the main road which had a lot of noisy, fast moving traffic all night long. The lodge slept 6, and would have been very cheap for 6. For just 2 of us it was still quite expensive and not up to scratch. We have paid the same amount elsewhere for spotless modern lodges. We bought some crips from reception and then discovered after eating them that they expired 2 months ago! The biggest problem was the WiFi. We apparently had 2 GB of data each day for our 2 day stay. Our automatic photo backups had used all the data within 30 mins of arriving and we then had no more internet for the rest of our stay! Overall a disappointing stay.

We had just one night at the lodge. It was fine and suited our needs, though unfortunately their thermal pools were closed when we visited. That would have added a nice touch. Our cabin was roomy if somewhat dated, though it looked like some improvements had been made in recent years. Importantly, everything worked, including the wifi. Kitchen was well equipped. Was quite chilly in the cabin though and couldn't see much in the way of heating apparatus - I hate to think what it is like in mid-winter.

Clean and a good bed, and being able to use the hot pools was a lovely bonus. Everything worked well, and the hosts were friendly. This is an economic stay (not a luxury place), but if you are okay with a place to rest, basic & clean, with access to hot pools from morning til evening, then enjoy.

This place has a lot going for it; the free hot pools, free internet, easy location and access to all the park has to offer. At first glance it looked a bit like it's in a time warp, but there's new flooring, new cupboards, new bathroom etc, so it's obvious that money has been spent on keeping this place up to date. For me there's a few touches that could make it so much better. For example, robes, so you can walk between the pools and your room without having to get dressed, undressed and dressed again. More towels. Daily re-stock of tea/coffee/milk. But all in all would i come again - most definately, YES.

We were so lucky to land at this lodge. We booked on short notice and were very pleasantly surprised. The room was huge, (we took the 2bdm because it was the last one available) with 2 bedrooms a kitchen, lounge and bathroom downstairs, then another bedroom upstairs with 3 single beds in the loft. Altogether, it could sleep 9, but I'm not sure I would want to share the 1 bathroom with 8 others! We used the cooking facilities and they were all fine. Of course, the feature is the mineral pools. These were amazing with 3 private pools, 2 at 40°C and one at 30° and a family pool that was larger and open with a pool fence, but still covered and heated by the natural hot spring. The hosts were very friendly, but also not imposing. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it.

Tokaanu public hot pools just a short walk away, plus the Lodge has its own hot pools. Turangi a very short drive away with supermarket and plenty of restaurants. Conveniently placed to visit Tongariro National Park. The manager was very understanding when we cut short our stay due to poor weather and only charged us for the days we were there. The room was clean and well fitted out, if a little dated in style.

Lovely place to stay. Plenty of room for a family, separate bedroom, very clean, helpful and friendly staff, comfy beds. Nice quiet spot. Love all the sustainability initiatives. Highly recommend.

Great location, enjoyed the pools. Shame the hesting makes the upstairs so hot and the lower floor freezing.
