The Elks Head Inn

Very Disappointed with the breakfast - tea was cold, service slow, side plates cleared away before finished. The TV in room was not working properly - only had one channel. The room was clean and had a comfortable bed. The evening meal was good.

The Elk's Head is a well kept traditional north country pub with restaurant and rooms in a quiet and attractive rural location, ideally placed for exploring the scenic and historic attractions of the North Pennines. We had an excellent dinner including venison from the local Whitfield estate and a sustaining breakfast the following morning, served by helpful and cheerful staff. Our room and ensuite shower were clean and comfortable if compact, but the surrounding hills prevented any signal reaching our TV as often happens in these parts. It suits us and shall have no hesitation in returning.

Absolutely fantastic food, friendly staff great tranquil location ideally based for visiting Hadrians wall. Rooms were comfortable but the highlight for us were the evening meals great choices well presented and tasted fantastic will definitely visit again.

A beautiful place to stay. The owners and staff are lovely. They took on this pub with rooms just 2 years ago following a pandemic. They have worked so very hard, and still are, to make it what it is today. It’s warm and cosy and the food is sooo good ! Well done The Elks Head. It’s central to many places of interest. Book early because the rooms are in high demand !

We stayed here for two nights as a base to see the area. Jennifer the landlady was fabulous. Our room was great with clean comfortable bedding and everything we needed. We had two breakfasts, during our stay, a lunch and dinner. All the food was excellent and tasty. Would definitely go back.

We can't believe our luck in finding the Elk's Head. The riverside situation is perfection, the peace and quiet soothe the spirit, the friendliness of the staff is uplifting. We had a nicely furnished room, a comfortable bed and a well appointed shower room. The dinner choices were imaginative and well cooked and presented - I had smoked venison salad followed by oxtail suet pudding and finally a rhubarb sorbet - all delicious. Breakfast was generous and we particularly appreciated the fresh fruit salad. In short...full marks all round.

Excellent hotel. Located in a beautiful quiet location at the side of a river. Nice and comfortable room, decent sized bathroom. Comfy bed. We had breakfast and evening meal, both were excellent, the chef is really good. Staff very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back for a longer stay next time.

Booked a weekend break after bit of research via a popular booking platform. Choice made by location, photos, reviews and very good pricing. Wasn’t disappointed when arrived to a lovely welcome and even though it rained a fair bit , the beauty of the surrounds was undeniable. Our room was a good size as was the bathroom , radiator and towel rack kept them warm and the shower was powerful with great temperature settings. Bed was comfy and I personally loved the country style decor. We ate both evenings at the inn and food quality was excellent. When dry, there were peaceful and interesting walks to be had and a lovely village shop/cafe which we had a light late lunch at. Within a short drive you can be in Hexham or other smaller pretty villages. Our R&R break was made not only by the location but the friendliness and care of the owners and their family/staff. I’m sure we will take another break there in the not too distant future.

This place is a traveler's best kept secret, as is Northumberland. Nestled above the banks of the river Allen, its vista over the dramatic Pennine wilderness is sublime. A warm welcome awaits. The rooms are cottage cosy but with ample space. The menu is fresh and genuine, show casing fine local produce. Breakfast was delicious. A broad wine list and a good choice of local beers will more than suffice most tastes. Can't wait for the next wild adventure to the land in which time pauses and people go out of their way to be hospitable.
