Lovely b&b located in an ideal spot to walk into Takaka and to reach the highlights of the Golden Coast and Abel Tasman. Room was great with a comfy bed and plenty of space. Everything was spotless. There’s space to sit in the garden or a short walk down to the creek to watch the water. Even an outdoor bath! Most of all we were treated like friends. Mark is warm and chatty. By the end of our short stay we felt like mates and had made good pals with other guests.

What a delightful B&B! This beautiful Victorian makes for a wonderful place to stay in Golden Bay. It’s extremely well maintained and decorated with art from around the world. Mark, the host makes you feel right at home. Each morning we’d gather around the breakfast table with the other guests to share stories of travel, and enjoy a fine breakfast of fresh eggs, fruit, and yogurt. Our room had amazing views with an attached bathroom including a tub to soak in. In the back is a nice dining area and a little wondering creek. We stayed for three nights, but then returned later for two more. We enjoyed it that much! Tell Mark we say hi!

We booked on a chance as not a usual user of b and bs but very pleased with choice. Shady rest is a quirky property full of character and a really good host in Mark . Breakfast is good and simple with the best scrambled eggs you will taste. I can recommend shady rest without any reservations.

A charming, very traditional bed and breakfast in a historic building. Mark couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. Clean and comfortable The rate includes a terrific breakfast. Highly recommend this as your stay option in Tākaka.

What a fabulous house. The rooms are large, the beds comfortable, the hot water plentiful and everywhere very clean. There is really interesting art throughout the house, and lovely furniture and furnishings. Mark was really helpful and gave us lots of good advice on where to visit, how to get the most from our walks and recommended restaurants. He was always available when needed and made us extremely welcome. We loved breakfast, especially the fruit salad and scrambled eggs. Would recommend this accommodation.

My wife and I were only here for a night but we’re thoroughly impressed with our stay at Shady Rest. Mark and his team were welcoming, and our suite was large, clean, and comfortable. The rest of the house has a great vintage vibe as well. It was great getting to know Mark, and chatting with a local about the area. He had some great recommendations for things that we initially overlooked in the area, not to mention a fabulous cook for breakfast :) Would highly recommend the Shady Rest to anyone in the Takaka area. You won’t regret it! Cheers!

Stayed at the Shady Rest for a week earlier in December. Fantastic location with lots of things to do and explore around Golden Bay. Treat yourself to a bit of luxury and enjoy great hospitality where nothing is too much trouble.
