Close proximity to historic district and major attractions, it is an ideal location for a vacation getaway in an authentic Onsen Ryokan. The ryokan has 4 exclusive natural hot-spring baths which may be used by guests at all times, and 5 rentable private baths. Approximately 10 minutes by Nagaden bus from Nagano Electric Railway Yudanaka Station. 2 minutes walk from bus stop "Shibu Onsen" or "Wagobashi"
*Shuttle service available from Yudanaka Station (according to train arrival time between 15:17 and 18:05)
There is no shuttle service to the hotel. Please make sure to check the operating hours of the transportation you will be using in advance and enjoy your trip with plenty of time to spare.

We wanted to stay in a traditional ryokan with access to hot spring baths and Kanaguya ticked all the boxes.
I found this guesthouse while researching onsen close to the snow monkey park near Yudanaka Station, which we planned to visit. The fact that it is cited as inspiration for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away was another reason for us to want to stay here. A beautiful traditional wooden guesthouse with eight baths, five of them private, and also access to the nine public baths in Shibu Onsen town (although we found these far too hot to actually bathe in, we enjoyed collecting all the stamps on a special towel!). Our room was Japanese style with sliding doors, tatami mats and futons. There was a bath and WC, but no shower, but it’s expected that guests use the hot spring baths available. All amenities are provided including yukata, obi belt, jacket, bathing supplies, and each bath has washing soap, shampoo and conditioner in dispensers. Staff were very friendly, and so polite, although the majority had limited English we did use google translate at times.
The multi course dinners were amazing, served in the exquisite dining room at the top of the house, which was originally a theatre, at traditional low tables and seats. Served in beautiful individual ceramic dishes, with multiple appetisers, followed by main dishes, miso soup, rice, and lastly desert. Although not everything was to our taste, the presentation was amazing and it was a wonderful experience trying so many different flavours. We stayed two nights, and the meals were different each night.
The guesthouse has a limited website page in English which directs foreigners to book via a specific third party (tour operator), but when I contacted her via the provided email was told the ryokan was closed for renovations during our preferred dates! Not helpful, as presumably they only wish to sell you a tour! I then did a wider search and found the ryokan available to book on Trip.com. Clearly it was not closed!
I would definitely recommend staying at Kanaguya and visiting Shibu Onsen if you wish to experience a traditional ryokan.

Kleiner und netter Ort. Wenn Sie am Bahnhof oder an der Bushaltestelle ankommen, rufen Sie an und sie holen Sie ab. Sie können zu Fuß gehen, wenn Sie möchten, aber es geht ein wenig bergauf, wenn Sie einen Koffer dabei haben. Das Personal ist wirklich nett und zuvorkommend. Eine unserer Freundinnen wurde auf der Reise schwanger, nachdem wir die Reise gebucht hatten, und sie konnte viele der Speisen nicht essen. Sie waren wirklich nett und haben mit dem gearbeitet, was sie essen konnte, und ihr sogar ein wenig Omamori (wie ein Zauber) für eine gesunde und sichere Schwangerschaft und Geburt gegeben. Würde es anderen empfehlen. Das individuelle Onsen in jedem Zimmer ist wunderbar und wenn Sie mehr Leute zusammenbringen möchten, nehmen Sie die größeren Zimmer. Der Fuji ist sichtbar, aber verstehen Sie, dass dies von der Tageszeit und der Jahreszeit abhängt. Aufgrund des kleineren Platzes gibt es unten nur einen Bereich zum Versammeln, wo Sie auch einchecken. Für uns keine große Sache, aber für diejenigen, die einen ganzen Bereich zum Herumlaufen im Hotel haben möchten, sollten Sie sich vielleicht die größeren Hotels ansehen.

My stay at this ryokan in Shibu Onsen was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was impeccable. The ryokan features private onsen that can be booked in advance, offering an intimate and serene experience. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters while gazing at the surrounding natural beauty was a highlight of the trip.
The ryokan’s free shuttle service made exploring the area incredibly convenient. We were easily transported to the iconic Snow Monkey Park, the nearby train station, and other local attractions, which added to the seamless experience.
The dining experience was nothing short of spectacular. Both private breakfast and dinner were served in a tranquil setting, with beautifully prepared dishes showcasing the best of seasonal and local ingredients. The flavors were authentic and delicious,

Our family made a special trip from Tokyo to Nagano, and besides exploring the surrounding attractions, watching the snow monkeys soaking in the hot springs of Nozawa, and visiting the Togakushi Shrine, the highlight of this trip was staying at Issa no Komichi Biyu no Yado.
Initially, we had modest expectations, thinking of it as just another experience. However, upon arriving in the snowy Yudanaka Shibu Onsen, we were immediately impressed by the warm and professional hospitality. From the thoughtful reception to the exquisite dinner and the unique public onsen, every aspect exceeded our expectations and left us pleasantly surprised. This wasn’t just a hotel stay—it was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Japanese onsen culture.
If you’re planning a trip to Nagano, this is definitely a place worth visiting to experience the perfect blend of hot springs and nature!

Были в феврале, на улице был минус, но в номере стоял обогреватель и был кондиционер. Не замерзли. В отели три онсена, один общий для мужчин один для женщин и один приватный. Так же дают ключь от 9 общесвенных онсенов на территори деревни. Хозяйка может забрать или отвезти до ближайшей станции, так же отвозила нас на ужин и в манкей парк. Завтрак традиционный. И в целом отель традиционный японский, советую кому интересно именно пожить в традиционном отеле. Но учтите спать нужно на татаме и ходить в тапочках, в оьуви не пускают, ну и мыться в онсене.

挑選了很久，找到油屋燈幹，外觀有一説一，着實不起眼。但內裏別有洞天。
這是一家風格時尚的日式旅館，温泉浴池在晚上
7.30後，男女對掉。白天和晚上可以欣賞不同的户外温泉的風景（個人覺得白天女生心更好看），另外酒店還提供付費私人露天温泉，提前預約。
温泉後20-23點，頂樓有個roof bar，是那種透明小屋，下雪》的天麼裏卻非常暖和。
我們的房間能欣賞到山巒和🌇對面房間可以看到河川的美景。
早餐可選比一般性酒店多且美味C，沒有預訂晚餐的我們選擇去了隔壁的一家“松美食堂”就餐，味道家常的小店。
•總體來説，這是一家性價比高且能讓人放鬆身心的温泉酒店。很意外的好。

Ich kann dieses Hotel nur wärmstens empfehlen, es sollte eines der besten in Nozawa sein. Die Zimmer sind geräumig und das Hotelpersonal ist ebenfalls sehr professionell und enthusiastisch. Besonders zu empfehlen sind die hoteleigenen Thermen, die über eine sehr gute Ausstattung verfügen und in einer romantischen Atmosphäre eingerichtet sind. Es kam vor, dass es nach dem Skifahren schneite und sich die heiße Quelle im Freien besonders gut anfühlte.

It's a 10 mins walk uphill from train station so maybe better to try to contact them for a complimentary pick up.
The place is super grand and 2 onsens. A Instagram worthy one that the males and females get to use it at different timings. The shower stuff in the onsen are mediocre though. No fancy facial stuff for women unlike some other onsens at this price range.
We had breakfast and dinner for the 2 nights. And well worth it. But you have to follow a fixed timing and we felt a bit rushed but otherwise it was really great and service perfect.
We had one the biggest rooms I believe Room 716. Had a sitting area and also a sleeping area. Easily fits 8 persons. We were only 2. In the day they kept the futons and brought it out at night. Towels changed every night.
There is a van that goes straight to Mount Yokoteyama ski resort. The receptionist didn't seem to know about it but you could try to Google. It was a complimentary ride to and fro if you bought the lift tickets. Took only like 30 mins to get there. You can get rentals at hotels there.

Thompoo Tong Tang ist warm, nahe dem Hell-Tal, die Station ist 20 Minuten zu Fuß. Es muss darauf hingewiesen werden, dass wir vor 5:30 Uhr ankommen können. Der Chef sagte, dass es nicht kriegen kann. Obwohl die Entfernung nicht lange ist, ist die Bergstraße noch ein bisschen Zeit, kann man auch mit dem Bus fahren, eine halbe Stunde Bus.
⭐ Service:
Der Ladenbesitzer hat zwei Personen zu bedienen, die Einstellung ist sehr gut. Die Reise am nächsten Tag wird Ihnen helfen, Ihre Gepäck in den Café am Rande der Station zu bringen. Es ist zu beachten, dass Sie nach 3 Uhr am Morgen bleiben können. Das Telefon kann nicht ins Zimmer rufen. 😂 Die Sachen sind im Zimmer gefallen. Drei Telefone wurden früher von niemandem angerufen. Schließlich kann die Schlange wieder in den Laden gehen.

Die Zimmer sind relativ einfach, die Einrichtungen sind relativ einfach, die Ehrlichkeit ist relativ kalt, es gibt keine Dusche und Toilette, der Badewanne hat kalt Wasser. Das Badezimmer und das warme Badezimmer sind allein gezahlt. 500 Yen, das öffentliche Badezimmer (das kleine japanische Hotel ist so) ist aber sehr sauber, weil das Zimmer weniger Gäste hat und das Badezimmer nicht jemand anderes getroffen hat. Gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist in jedem Fall möglich.
⭐ Esspunkt:
Wir haben das Paket Abendessen und Frühstück, die Gewichtsmenge ist sehr gering, es ist nicht zu essen, die Station muss sich daran erinnern, Rosendo etwas zu kaufen, die warme Straße ist Holz und ein bequemes Geschäft! Die Bergbauwasserversorgung ist nicht vorhanden, es wird eine zusätzliche Gebühr + 100 yen benötigt.
⭐ Wärme:
Die neun Suppe auf der Straße kann getrocknet werden, aber die Suppe hat einen Schnurrbarsch und es wird gescockt. Die private Suppe im Geschäft ist B1, relativ einfach, die Tiefe ist sehr schwer, nicht sehr sauber. Es wird empfohlen, die öffentliche Suppe zu gehen. Obwohl der Chef sagt, die öffentliche Suppe ist kein Platz für eine Badewanne, kann die Suppe + eine Suppe kaufen, ein bisschen fett.

GGastnutzerLocated just within 3min from Yudanaka station, Raki Onsenryokan is run by a Chinese family. As a quiet town on its own, no one was tending to the reception when I arrived, after ringing the bell, a lady came down to help with the check in - very straightforward. I believe the family stays in the same building as they said if we ever needed anything, we could just ring the bell at the reception. Obviously I had booked a room too big for a solo traveller as this was the only room left as ”non-smoking”. Toilet and sink are at two different parts of the room which was a little inconvenient. Ryokan offers free drive (15min) TO snow monkey park, but not return, so please cater at least 35min to walk from park exit to the bus stop. Ryokan also provided a hearty breakfast, overall for the price paid it was a decent stay!

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there.
The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance.
- The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit.
- The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning.
- After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics.
- Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30.
- The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want.
- The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this.
- Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern).
We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

Ddalia uribeThis small family owned onsen was a total jewel. Snuggled in a quiet small town. The scenery was amazing and local enough to walk to beautiful shrines and delicious local restaurants. I recommend booking breakfast, as it is a very private experience with an exquisite spread of traditional Japanese plates. The owners are sweet and super accommodating, with proper communication as we arrived super late (2:00am) and were still just as friendly and helpful.

A Der Chef ist gut in Englisch, der Kommunikation ist ohne Probleme (der Chef hat keine Konferenz);
B Im Zimmer gibt es ein Badezimmer, sehr bequem (die meisten Menschen sind öffentlich, nicht bequem)
C. In der warmen Stadt ist es sehr bequem zu essen;
D. Die Tür ist die Station und der Berg ist bequem zu skizieren.
E Innen- und Außenwärme sind sehr stark und leistungsfähig;
F Chef ist sehr nett, um einen Service für den Empfang/Versand/zu Snow Monkey Park zu bieten (dies ist sehr wichtig für den großen Snowfliegenden Thompo Thompoo, einige Menschen sind nicht bereit)
Ein Wort, kommen Sie zum Skigebiet, wählen Sie das große Haus!

GGastnutzerSome of the best customer service we've ever experienced. Ms. Abe was wonderful and her English was excellent. The outdoor onsen was perfect, truly beautiful. A big, well landscaped area, truly relaxing. All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more. The breakfast was also very good, and the room was sizeable. This was our favourite stay in Japan.

Das Zimmer ist sehr groß, die Klimaanlage ist heiß, die Leute fürchten, dass es nicht so heiß ist, das Warmgebet wird viel besser, das Kunbu-Mahl im Zimmer ist sehr lecker, und ich habe auch einige gekauft, wenn ich gehe.
Die Suppe ist eine Gebührenbegrenzung.
Die Kleider im Zimmer sind vergleichsweise fettig.
Das beste ist, dass das Hotel einen Transferservice bietet, und am nächsten Morgen können Sie ohne Gepäck direkt an den Parkplatz an den Kaufwagen anrufen, um das Hotel zu holen. Das Hotel wird Ihnen helfen, die Menschen direkt von den Kaufwagen an den Parkplatz in Thompton zu nehmen, Das ist für die Freizügigkeit sehr bequem!

They gave me yukata and towel and changed it every day. I had a tea and enjoyed it on my balcony. I tried a futon at first time in my life.
I had my own reserved table for breakfast.
❗❗❗The hotel has its own bus with driver, which took me to the Snow Monkey Park and to the station for free!
Actually staff was so polite! It is seems like you are someone important.
Actually the only one minus that you can't go to all 9 Shibu Onsen's baths, but just to 9th bath only. But the hotel has its own bath even open-air.
It was really nice and comfortable accommodation.

GGastnutzerWe like both the services and the cleanliness of the room. However, the hotel needs to upgrade their bathroom and sink. You can't get a good warm temperature in winter when there are 2 taps, one for cold and one for hot. See the pictures attached. The rubber hose in one of our bathrooms broke. Fortunately, they could come immediately to replace it for us. Overall, the stay is ok, but we hope the hotel can upgrade the sink and bathroom.

GGastnutzerExcellent location next to ski lift at Sun Valley. 3 mins walk to the local bus station with buses going to Nagano Station direct (express service) or Yudanaka station.
Room and bath room (2 basins and 1 sink) are spacious - we had 3 futons and 2 single beds for our family of 5. They may be a little dated but very clean. Room has a view to outside snowy forest during our time.
Highlights of our stay:
Half board meals - authentic Japanese! Big portions and lots of pretty and dishes served! Free coffee everyday in late afternoon.
Service was impeccable - the front desk lady (very friendly and excellent service disposition) , and the elderly folks who served in the restaurant - thumbs up!
