We needed a one-night stay to break up a drive Downeast and by chance found the Alamoosook Lakeside Inn. Got the last available room (inn was hosting a wedding the next day) and we're glad we did. Truly a secluded lakeside location, complete with loons calling to each other at dusk. Kayaks and a paddleboat for guests. Lawn chairs to sit by the water or under the lakeside trees. Basic, spotless room. Comfortable bed. Fluffy towels. Tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, gluten-free toast for my wife; large bowl of yogurt, granola and Maine blueberries for me. No cost for weekday mornings; there is a full weekend brunch at extra cost, but with a $10 reduction for guests. Inn co-owner Chausey juggled her duties as hostess, chef, receptionist and mother with grace and good humor. She offered to grill hamburgers or vegan burgers for that night but we opted for dinner in nearby Bucksport. She called Verona Wine and Bistro to make reservations for us. (Small plate dining on an outdoor patio. Do try it.) We would love to return.
