White Angel Hotel

We stayed at white Angel for a week in early February. The hotel as a whole there are positives and negatives. The hotel is very clean, modern and well maintained. It is in a great place to provide amazing views of the mountains. The shuttle bus that operates between the hotel and the town centre is convenient and the drivers are all friendly. The spa is lovely and is very relaxing. The restaurants food is very well cooked (but limited and does not cater to all tastes). The bar is also a lovely area to sit and have a drink and admire the views and it is quite reasonably priced and the staff are attentive. The main negative of the hotel has to be the temperature. The rooms are so ridiculously hot it could only be described as sleeping in a lit furnace. We spent the back end of the week sleeping with the door out onto the patio open all night to get the room at a respectable temperature. The thermostat on the wall does nothing other than tell the room temp so you can’t even control the room temp. The second negative is the sound proofing of the rooms to the corridor… don’t expect to enjoy a lie in. In a morning you can hear every crash bang and voice in the corridor outside the room as if the noise was coming from the end of the bed, we were woken up every morning by some kind of disturbance from the corridor. The restaurant had a limited menu that is very “fine dining” the starter buffet was confusing, nothing had a sign telling you what it was so it was a bit of trial and error what you tried. The service wasn’t particularly smooth and staff often seemed flustered and disorganised which meant we were often ignored for 5-10 minutes when trying to catch someone’s attention. Overall the hotel was very nice and we enjoyed our stay however there were small things that tarnished what could be a very good hotel which was a shame.

Don’t expect the advertised ‘gourmet food’ at dinner!! Overcooked, dry, no sauces or garnishes, terrible flavours, mass produced main courses. Buffet starter is largely yesterday’s food re-cycled and made into canapés - goodness knows how many days old the food is! There were a few fresh dishes of seafood but they are tasteless. Restaurant staff need better training- customer service ethic is missing. You get the distinct impression maitre d rules by fear! And don’t even try to move tables or ask for your food to be changed- it’s totally inflexible and unresponsive!!!! Our advice- eat out at some of the fab restaurants in town first s much better experience!

We arrived yesterday morning and after reading the reviews on trip advisor I was more than a little worried about what I would find. So far it is fantastic, the room is clean comfortable and modern, a fabulous view of the slopes from our balcony, the food is excellent and plentiful, so much choice… found some good wine to have last night with dinner. The staff are very friendly and helpful, I had the pool and spa area all to myself this morning while the skiers in our group went up the mountain. The club sandwich in the bar makes an excellent lunch option if you don’t want to venture down into town. I will edit my review as the week progresses but what a fantastic start…

The front desk service is inconsistent in regard to who is giving the information you need. We’ve had issues with heating and heard 2-3 different stories of why there was insufficient heat. However, the food is pretty good. The shuttle service can be better in letting you know if they decide to pick you up from the cableway or not. We learned, after waiting for over 40 minutes to be picked up from the cableway, that if there are too many passengers from the first pick up location (church) they will not come to the cableway stop. Otherwise it is a decent place to stay while you are enjoying your winter vacation!

Perhaps it was the start of the season, but we did not come away for our 3 day mini ski break feeling warm and fluffy about this hotel.. Check in was not smooth, it felt like we were an inconvenience, and the receptionist seemed terrified when initially we only produced my passport (my husband was trying to sort out the car parking… which is another story..). And the business of having to bring €€ in your dressing gown to go to the spa- surely the spa (about 10 meters from reception) could come to an arrangement with the hotel whereby the spa bill would be charged to the room…?? And on check out, having paid our €1,111 bill for three nights and one meal, it felt petty to be chased as we headed to the car because they had forgotten to add an additional €10 for parking. That said the head waiter was delightful and also the shuttle bus driver. Overall it feels like this hotel could use an experienced hotel manager who could turn it into a smoother operation…We have skied plenty of times in the area but we won’t be back to this hotel.

Lots of good points. Food at breakfast and dinner was excellent and the staff were great.Nice bar for pre-dinner drinks. Our room was well equipped and comfortable with extra pillows. It was a good four star. The ski in -ski out is great amd unlike some other reviewers we were happy with the rental and ski shop. Negatives were having to pay €23 each to use the pool and loungers in addition to the €600 a night half board for the room. It should be included.
