My wife and I stayed here for a night and were disappointed, especially having read all the glowing reviews. We’re not sure if it has to do with the hotel having changed hands in May (2024) but, for us, what let it down was…. 1/ an underwhelming welcome, lacking warmth and an explanation of the facilities (e.g. the spa which, with only staying one night, we missed the opportunity to use due to its limited hours)… although the chap did give us a quick walk around the lounge and breakfast area on the way to showing us our room; 2/ it felt understaffed; we sat outside for an hour or so late afternoon but there are no staff to ask if you want drinks; you have to go back to the chap at reception and order there; 3/ having asked for an iron at reception, I was handed both the iron and ironing board to carry myself to the room (I already had one hand full); at asking, someone did bring up the ironing board on my behalf; 4/ the hotel lacks life; there is a nice lounge area but no bar; again, you have to ask the same chap at reception to place your order for a drink… but it didn’t feel like a place to enjoy. 5/ there is no coffee machine or mini fridge in the Superior double room, just a little kettle and sachets located in the bathroom. On the plus side, the building and grounds are fabulous, the room was nice (but only nice, not great). And the staff we interacted with were perfectly nice. We didn’t get the chance to experience their in-house restaurant as it was closed on the night we stayed, but the restaurant just outside the main entrance (we think affiliated with the hotel) was lovely. On balance, we wouldn’t stay here again. I think there are nicer hotels that offer more warmth and hospitality than this place, albeit without the wonderful setting and grounds.
