Grays Court Hotel

We were only here for lunch courtesy of a birthday voucher from my daughter but both the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff were second to none. It must be wonderful to dine alfresco during the summer in the immaculate gardens at the rear. Expensive but worth it.

We have traveled throughout many countries and as they say “There is no place like Home”. Well last weekend we visited Grays Court with 4 friends and I must say this is probably the best Hotel we have ever stayed in. Very Old Worldly but what fantastic staff they have, every member of staff we encountered were wonderful. You really felt wanted and nothing was a problem to them. The hotel was spotlessly clean considering most walls were old stone. We did not eat in the restaurant as my Good Lady is not into Taster Menus but the Breakfasts were excellent. The Gardens are superb, backing up to the walls of the Old City. Two minutes from the Minster and Shopping Area.

Just steps from York Minster and a short walk to The Shambles and other sights of medieval York. This 1000 year old building (yes, thousand) has all the modern amenities without compromising one bit of traditional English charm. One of the most helpful and friendliest staffs you will find in any hotel anywhere. I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else on my next visit to York.

An excellent experience from start to finish. This property has so much character and history. It’s an excellent quality hotel only yards from the Minster. So, location is fantastic and convenient for all of York’s city centre attractions. The hotel facilities are great, and the garden deserves a special mention - it’s a peaceful place to enjoy a relaxing drink or two. The hotel team are all polite, professional and friendly. This is a gem of a centrally located hotel to make the most of all that York has to offer.

We have just thoroughly enjoyed a couple of nights staying at Grays Court, under the shadow of The Minster, and simply could not have enjoyed our time more. Not only is it a brilliant location for anyone wishing to stay inside the medieval walls of York, but it’s a fabulous historic building with its own private parking for guests. One of the many highlights of our stay was the quality of the staff, they were all outstanding and should be treasured, as without their meticulous care and attention this would be just another fancy hotel, but they made our experience unforgettable. Of the many highlights, we were blown away by the quality of the meals which we were fortunate to enjoy. Breakfast was superbly put together and presented and our dinner in the restaurant was simply exquisite. Our room was clean and well presented and all in all we can’t wait to return later in the year.

This is a high class hotel, with a restaurant to match and it fully earns it's 5 stars and its 3AA rosettes. It occupies an ancient building, with reception sitting in the cloisters of the old (really old - 1000 years) abbey. You could not get more central, though a building with such a history will not provide lifts and some of the modern features. What it does offer is service. We were welcomed at reception by an enthusiastic and charming lady who was obviously committed to ensuring that we had a wonderful time in the hotel. She transpired to be typical of the staff - charming and really keen to make our visit as close to perfect as possible. Dinner at the Bow Room was a continuation of this theme - high quality ingredients cooked with a light touch and again served by staff who were committed to the highest of standards. The building is ancient, but standards are totally modern. Our room was immaculate and very comfortable. The en suite was small, in order to fit in, but well equipped and sparkling. For a taste of luxury and complete relaxation, I can not rate Grays Court too highly.

A special experience staying in this lovely old historic building, with ghosts and memories of bishops, royalty and subversive plots oozing from every wall and corner. Faultless service and comfort all round. +VE Possibly the best location in York, with spacious garden for afternoon tea and its own private access to the wall around the old town. Staff uniformly excellent, with a special mention of Susannah 'the Polish queen' who was unfailingly helpful, smiling and passionate about her work -VE A slight irritation that the bar did not do 'Dom Pedro's'and at the same time 'had run out of Bailey's' Best to avoid the de Montfort room which is right next to the stairway leading up to the next floor; also west facing which could be a trial during hot summer days.

Beautiful period hotel in the heart of York. Easy reach of York Minster. Our room had amazing view of the minster, overlooking the garden. Really really quiet. Staff really attentive and accommodating, nothing too much trouble. We stayed 4 days and could walk to restaurants with chefs inventing some mouth watering menus for dinner plus explore York and the surrounding areas so easily. Special shout out to the Bow Restaurant located within Greys Court Hotel.

Just back from a stay at Greys. I was thoroughly disappointed as most previous reviews were positive. In the sense of balance the garden is lovely and most staff are helpful and polite. However the property is in need of major refurbishment and redecoration. The building is grade one but this should not be used as an excuse not to do anything. Our room had rotting window frames, sash windows that would only stay open if you placed something in the frame to wedge them open and paintwork that was thoroughly chipped and scuffed. The room was excessively hot and we were unable to turn it down as some of the hotel heating/hot water pipes ran through our bedroom emitting heat even when the radiators were off. Downstairs the smell of school diners/food cooking in the main hallway was nauseous. Breakfasts of supermarket sliced bread and very small portions. I could go on but suffice to say I would not recommend it and won’t be going back.
