My husband and I stayed at the Inn by the River many, many years ago and loved it. When we decided to return with our teenage sons it was a natural first choice for lodging. There were no rooms available in the inn but we were thrilled to get a two-bedroom cabin (#5) for the four of us. Unfortunately, it was not to the standards of the Inn--at all. Pros--clean. Excellent view of the Kennebec. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast at a reasonable price (not included). Air-conditioner--saving grace for the extremely humid days during our stay. Cons--Horrible, hard beds. Mine was slanted at an angle. When I pulled my pillowcase back there was an old bloodstain on my pillow--eeewww! Mice--at least two running around. The inn was very responsive and set up traps but no luck catching them. Kitchen had some items but missing others--coffee filters, cookie sheets, etc. There was no clear listing on the website as to what was provided so it was a surprise. Ceiling light fixtures low and uncovered for my tall family--glad no one broke a lightbulb with their heads. Furnishings poor--sketchy tiny couch in living room area, bedside 'table' in my room was actually a chair. Advertised fire pit was in the parking area near the busy road--no seating. No where to hang clothes on hangers in bedrooms. Overall, far more cons that pros. For what we paid and the cabins' affiliation with the Inn, we expected MUCH more. I kept thinking about how it would be fairly easy to make the cabins very cute and inviting with some simple updates, but as they are now, I would advise travelers to pass.
