"I was first attracted to Elephant Forest Phitsanulok (EFP) (previously called Sappraiwan Elephant Sanctuary - see 3 photos attached) by its expressed application of ethical principles in its care for rescued elephants, quite unlike the other elephant sanctuaries that I had previously visited in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket. These other sanctuaries sadly make their ‘rescued’ elephants perform in a variety of ways and often punish their ‘disobedience’ in such unnatural training, aimed simply to please those humans without deep understanding of how to protect and nourish wildlife. My husband and I took the Special Express Train to Phitsanulok city in order to experience the scenic route as recommended by several sightseeing sites and were met by one of the EFP drivers, Mr. Rock, at the train station promptly. He was attentive and considerate, suggesting and taking us to stop at one of the several Seven Elevens (7/11) on the way so that we could stock up on our favourite snacks and drinks. We were honoured to have the Activity & Elephant Welfare Manager, Sophia, in leading a half-day no-touch elephant experience the following morning. We were strolling in the forest on a parallel path from that of the two female elephant elders, one around 80 of age and the other in her 60s, a testimonial for the sanctuary’s achievement if we compare their ages with a wild elephant’s average life span of about 40. The morning walk was their daily ritual to roam and foliage while also keeping their muscles and joints in good working order and helping with the management of digestion issues suffered by the 80 year old elephant (see 2 photos taken during the walk attached). During the forest tour, Sophia not only explained the behaviour and habits of these elders and other rescued elephants in the sanctuary, but also the wider issue concerning the lack of forest space in Thailand (and wider Asia) for their releases to the wild and the traditional and now evolving relationships between people and elephants in Thailand. She also introduced us to various plants in the forest including a banyan tree of several hundred years old, several clusters of mile-a-minute, some blue trumpet vines, and a pink shower - they are beautifully captured in 4 photos attached. She then described to us the rich catalogue of birds living in the forest. I was most impressed by tiny brown-throated sunbirds who were feasting on nectars from blooming flowers. The calls of some well-hidden grey peacock pheasants and Asian koels added to the richness of the forest. Naturally, many common mynas mixing with groups of doves and pigeons serve well as a disguising screen for the activities of bulbuls and sun birds. Listening to the symphony from these bird calls surrounded by the topical trees and scrubs every morning on my short walk from the hotel room to the EFP cafe was the best morning energiser and it always set a positive mood for the rest of the day. After the enriching walk w"
