This was our first experience of a guest house having stayed in many five star hotels in the past (sometimes with very poor results). However, the Somerville is a class apart. Peter met us in the car park and helped us with our cases into his boutique home. He was extremely personable and very helpful. Very interested in our reasons for choosing his establishment, he didn't seem surprised to hear about our recent disappointing stay in one of Torquay's supposedly luxury hotels. He took us up to the delightful Somerville room which which has three televisions (including one in the bathroom)! This was stylishly furnished in a unique way with a nod to past splendours and the attention to detail was exceptional. Later, he even arranged a table for us in No 7, Torquay's premier fish restaurant, for that evening. This was no mean feat as it is notoriously difficult to book a table there at short notice. Fortunately, he was friends with the owner. In fact, he appears to be very well connected in the area! We enjoyed a very comfortable night and met Helen the following morning when she served us an excellent breakfast, including Eggs Royale and home made preserves. The purpose of our visit was to watch "A Question of Sport" at the Princess Theatre and he directed us to an excellent Italian restaurant for a pre performance meal. We only stayed for two nights but this experience was in sharp contrast to recent hotel stays where service, hospitality, and dining had been well below par despite the inflated costs. We can recommend The Somerville without reservation for a short stylish break where you will be most welcomed, entertained, and fed by a highly profession couple who really enjoy their work. Exception value for money and an experience you will want to repeat.
