Enjoy this cozy 3-bedroom home perched up above the Catskill woods with a spectacular view of Overlook Mountain, the center of Tibetan Buddhism in North America and recognized as a sacred site by the Iroquois Confederacy at the Council at Onondaga in 1979. All 3 bedrooms lead out onto the west-facing deck for majestic sunsets. Great hiking trails abound and winter ski resorts are a 20-30-min drive.On the east side of Big Blue you will look out into the forest from the 400 sq ft deck with a BBQ grill and patio table for outdoor meals. In the mornings sunrises filter through the Red American Oak and Shagbark Hickory trees, growing down a forest embankment leading to Plattekill Creek with a bridle path along it for secluded walks. You'll see deer and foxes and chipmunks scurrying around and the occasional black bear lumbering around. We have very fast wi-fi and one of the 3 bedrooms also serves as a great place to work remotely while looking out at the mountain view. We just renovated the whole house and it has a fabulous kitchen and living space, and a state of the art induction stove. We are solar powered and use no fossil fuels for cooking or heat, and we're connected to the electric grid so there is never a shortage of electricity but in fact we generate enough power with our solar array that we are mostly feeding the grid.The master bathroom is a beautiful bright space lined with Portuguese tiles, a lovely place to soak in the tub or the glass shower while looking out the window at the forest.We are on a quiet country road that makes for easy walks, but there are many trails in the area including the remarkable Sloan Gorge. The renowned Opus 40 sculpture park is 5 minutes away. Also the wonderful Smokehouse of the Catskills is a 5-minute drive. There is something very special about it and this property. You won't want to go to sleep watching shooting stars from the deck on a summer night. On a 20-degree afternoon in the middle of a blizzard, it is 80 degrees and silent inside. Eight guests have gotten engaged here. (All said "yes!") Another guest chopped his bundle of wood into 1,000 toothpick-sized pieces thinking that the fire would burn longer and hotter that way. (It does not.)There are streams and cliffs and tons of wildlife on the property. Owls and red-shouldered hawks soar above the forest cabin, as well as fireflies in the summer. The Houtman Retreat is very special property. Located between Saugerties and Woodstock, the house is sited on a quiet country road, and while the property is private, it is not isolated. The interior is just as special: 4 bedrooms and three baths, well separated for privacy but with spacious common areas for comfortable conviviality. (We can offer a 2-bedroom, 2-bath version for less cost if you need a smaller space.)There is a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and a gas fireplace in the sitting room. There is a spacious kitchen, well stocked, and in another area is a prep kitchen just in case you’re cooking for a crowd. And if two kitchens aren’t enough, there is an outdoor kitchen in back with a gas grill, a smoker, and a pizza oven!For fun in summer, we have a 4-foot deep heated pool that is available 3rd week in May through third week in September. The hot tub is available all year round. And for more fun any time, a lovely walk down the path behind the property lands you next to the stream. Take a lazy walk along the cleared path, or just sit and look and the water flowing and the wildlife moving about. The style was carefully chosen and executed. The atmosphere is calming and restful and, above all, comfortable. The upstairs master provides a king-size bed. Downstairs we have 3 bedrooms, one hosts a queen bed and a view of the pool, another has a king, and the 4th bedroom has bunk beds—a twin on top and a full on the bottom.We provide all linens and towels for both the bath and the pool/hot tub. The amenities include both a heated pool that opens on May 1 and that stays open until October 31. (The hot tub is available all year round.) Both the pool and hot tub are both located in a glass-enclosed structure with retractable ceiling and sides. The main part of the house has a well-appointed kitchen and dining room, plus a screen porch seating area for nicer weather. The living room with wood-burning fireplace and Smart TV is also in this part of the house, along with a piano for those who like to play. Upstairs, the loft-style space houses the master bedroom with queen bed, and an en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and separate stall shower. There is a desk in the room for work-related activities, and there is a small balcony for taking breaks from such, with a lovely view of the natural pond. As well, the laundry facilities are on this floor.Downstairs is the second bedroom, which can be set up with either two twin beds or one king-size bed. Next door is a bathroom with stall shower.Down the breezeway is where the third bedroom can be found. There is a bedroom with a queen-size bed up the spiral staircase. On the first floor is another living room/game room with a Smart TV, a foosball table, and assorted toys and games for guests of all ages. There is a full bath with stall shower here, too.Between the house and pool house is a stone fire pit and a gas grill. We supply the wood and the propane.
