Stepping into Finca Luna Nueva must have been what it felt like for the early human explorers. The land is teaming with life and lush plants, some which have been around since the dinosaur age – we’re talking millions of years. The rainforest is pristine without being treacherous for the kids – as the owners built a great walkway. During our week we saw wild sloths, toucans, kinkajous, agoutis, snakes, leaf cutter ants, bullet ants, basilisks, swarms of stingless bees, large beatles, tropical orb spiders, vultures and scores of other birds than we can’t even mention. The entire property is centered around a natural pool, which was great for the kids as we faced a sweltering 95-degree heat wave while we were there… and a modest restaurant – which served excellent food. The chefs used many local ingredients, fruits, vegetables, and spices to cook surprisingly great meals that even the kids enjoyed. Some of our favorites were the fish tacos, the Casado, the kimchi and the kids were obsessed with the beans and rice. Also, during the day the staff, who were very accommodating, made fresh smoothies for the kids and refreshing iced lattes for the adults. Some of the highlights of staying there included the chocolate making class, where a guide taught the kids how to make chocolate from cocoa beans grown on the farm… the bird watching… the night hike, where we saw all sorts of mysterious creatures including poison dart frogs and a frog the size of a thumbnail (they’re not out during the day)… and our daughter’s favorite, the milking of the cows, where she was able to milk cows right into a glass she drank from. The facility itself is a fascinating testimony to how biodynamic farms can not only flourish, but also be a beautiful place. The runoff from the cow stable, was filtered through a process that fed plants, followed by the tilapia (which they served at the restaurant), and ultimately returned the clean water back to the river. One distinct thing to note was how fresh it smelled. It was unlike any farm I’ve ever been to, especially considering the heat, I was expecting it to be ripe. Although the kids burned through a couple vomit bags on the windy, 2+ hour journey to get there, once we arrived it was well worth it. The place is conveniently situated 45 minutes from Tabacon, the hot springs, which we enjoyed one evening, and 45 minutes from the Mistico Arenal hanging bridges in Fortuna (worth it). Overall awesome experience, the kids will never forget. I recommend going with another family, if you’ve gone young kids, it’s more fun for the kids to experience when they have a friend to do it with.
