The first thing it is important to know about Vinto House is that it is not a house in normal parlance at all. Vinto House Downtown, the accommodation at Via Adolfo Cilento 13, is a large second floor apartment divided into four ensuite rooms themed by reference to four different capital cities – we had London – and a communal seating/breakfast area. For *********** to say it “is set on the beachfront in Salerno” is a gross misrepresentation. It is two busy streets and a small park away from the seafront which is not a beach anyway. I suggest you check it carefully on Google Maps! It is at least served by a lift, unlike Vinto House Old Town, which we went to in error, which is not. However you have to first climb a flight of about ten steps before you get to the level of the lift! Our room at VH Downtown had some of the most ghastly and impractical furniture we have ever seen. There was no proper chair to sit on, just a square unit that might have been an additional bed. It fronts onto a very busy road and the double glazing was no match for it. The bed was reasonably comfortable but was one of those with a rim round it on which it was easy to catch your shins when walking round it, given that the room was quite small and there was little room to manoeuvre anyway. The bathroom was small but OK. The breakfast was truly lamentable. Little choice and the lady running it microwaved the croissants – which, of course, made them soggy! The surrounding downtown area of Salerno is a very ordinary shopping area. It is a 5 minute walk to the Old Town which is, however, quite fun. We slept so badly – mainly because of the road noise - that we left after one night of our intended three night stay, writing off the cost paid in advance off as experience. Overall VH Downtown certainly did not merit the adjective “luxury”. The room and the whole set up was pretty basic – perhaps just above backpacker standard but only a very modest AirBnB standard in my view. If you go to Vinto House Old Town, about 10 minute’s walk from VH Downtown, do be careful if you arrive by car. Firstly it is not easy to find – though Google Maps will get you there - but most importantly do not be tempted to drive into the little courtyard where it is – the Larghetto S. Pietro a Corte – because it is protected by a security system and a rising bollard which traps you in! And remember it is on the second floor and there is no lift! The old town area around VHOT is quite fun though with plenty of bars and restaurants etc nearby.
