We were looking for an inexpensive place to spend the night in the countryside around Chinon. We wanted something comfortable, clean, out of a city and with a restaurant, so when I found a hotel listed for €51 a night in the small town of Beaumont-sur-Veron, I thought I’d hit the jackpot. We called ahead and made reservations. When we got there, I realized we were getting what we had paid for! Not only was it not in the countryside, it was in an industrial zone right next to a giant French nuclear plant! It had no country charm, was decorated in non-coordinating garish colors and the mattresses were horrible. Even worse was the itty bitty shower, so small that the two-sided shower curtain clung to my body as I tried to shower. It was disgusting thinking of it having touched the bodies of all the previous guests! Dinner followed suit: re-cycled vegetables in the crudités and the veggie “casserole” served with the main dish, and a steak so gristly I had to leave half of it on the plate. I give it a 3 rather than a 2 or 1 because it actually had great air conditioning, which we sorely needed because it was over 90° outside, because it was clean, had free WiFi and a flat screen TV. If you want air-conditioning, a clean room, and don’t mind a mediocre meal and a nuclear power plant as your neighbor, this is a great deal!
