Patterdale Hotel

The Patterdale Hotel is a grounded, muddy boots hotel, full of great characters, welcoming staff, basic but clean rooms and generous breakfasts and dinners. Its incredible value if you want a place where you can park up and walk to the fells for 5 days. Yes - its basic, the sound proofing is limited, its a little step back in time but after walking all day its just what's needed. Thank you Robert, Hazel, Andy and all.

We recently visited The Patterdale Hotel as part of a large group of walkers. Check-in was smooth and friendly. Serving meals to a large group can be a challenge but the staff were super efficient. There was always a choice of two meat-based meals, a fish and veggie option and portions were more than adequate for hungry walkers. There are many walks direct from the hotel - both challenging and easy. Thanks to a great team ( and the weather) for an excellent stay.

Well we did it again and had a lovely week’s walking. This hotel is perfect. Great value and the food is fabulous. (To fabulous). The staff as always, are great hard working (every one of them). New addition Hazel fitted right in and added to the restaurant staff. And Mick behind the bar has become a great barman. (Well done Mick). If you want a posh hotel go to The Inn on the Lake and pay lots for the privillage but if you want a great base for walking the The Patterdale Hotel is the place. Great views great location and great people. Do it!

We went for a 2 night stay using a Travelzoo voucher bought for us as a gift. The experience was definitely one of pros and cons. Firstly all the staff were friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts were excellent and the evening meal was reasonable (although we found a starter option of fruit salad on the menu a bit bizarre). The hotel is perfectly located for walking, with lovely views of the fells. The hotel is very, very dated and the public areas are quite shabby with scuffed paintwork, broken fixtures and fittings and grubby carpets. The worst public areas by far are the main bar lounge and other little public seating areas. A number of guests described them as like being in a bleak old folks home which really does give an accurate view. They definitely didn’t tempt us to linger there after dinner. We stayed in room 120 on the first floor. Unfortunately this room is directly above the bar and a sound system speaker screwed to the ceiling. We asked to be moved as the noise in our room was intolerable (to be fair our request to move was agreed right away by reception staff). In summary I would say that the hotel is OK if all you are looking for is somewhere to use as a base for walking and a reasonable meal and breakfast. Anything over and above this I would say there are better alternatives.

Made to feel very unwelcome. Been walking all day came back into Patterdale and thought we would stop at the hotel. Something we regretted instantly. Staff very unfriendly. Did not ask if they could help etc just looked at us. We had one drink and left. We were planning on staying for food but the atmosphere was so unwelcoming and the bar felt like a care home lounge. After reading other reviews I think I have been to the wrong place.

A great place to stay in a perfect location. I was greeted with a warm welcome by everybody working at the hotel. Together they created a warm atmosphere that you could see every one enjoyed. The rooms were very clean, the showers and baths were hot and the bed was comfy. Very quiet at night making it easy to get to sleep. Breakfast was tasty too. Really impressed and will recommend to friends and readers of this review. James
