Hotel Mizo is situated on the shores of the beautiful Lake Ohrid in Southern North Macedonia. It’s picturesque 25 minute walk over the headland to the Ohrid old town, whilst the local community on the doorstep are quiet, kind and respectful - even if some tour operators might have differing opinions. The hotel boasts a spacious dining/function room with a highly effective sound system, outdoor bar area, access to the lake shore (and friendly local dogs - cuddles encouraged!) with sun loungers, and a pool. The complex also contains some apartments slightly away from the hotel epicentre - however these fall outside the scope of this review. The rooms are comfortable, and don’t concern themselves with the sort of frills that would distract from the wonderful sights and attractions in the locale. Several formats of room are offered (Standard room, double room, triple room, Annexe) - but no need to worry which you select on booking, as all rooms are close to indistinguishable… This is with one exception - each room comes with a unique scent (or musk?) - one assumes these will be released as a range of bespoke eau de parfums in due course, with the current supply chain challenges to blame for the delay in launching these in a hotel adjacent gift shop… one can only sit and wait for such a day with fingers crossed, as I’m certain “warm damp” from room 205 would be a game-changer on the London (UK) dating scene. The lack of in-room safe encourages (and empowers) you to take full responsibility of your valuables, or to entrust them to the hotel’s one-of-a-kind security team (more on that later). There are power plugs provided in the rooms, of which 2 are usable without posing a safety risk - whilst other hotels may offer more, Mizo’s provision promotes forward planning, and prioritisation of what really matters to you. Free Wi-Fi is provided in all rooms, but thoughtfully only works for approx 20 seconds at a time, effectively counteracting one of the scourges of our time - internet abuse. In these regards, and many more, a stay at Mizo promotes personal growth and self discovery. Mizo is not afraid to be a pioneer in green tourism. By following an “N minus one” policy on room towels, they save hundreds of unnecessary laundry loads a year whilst only requiring guests to do minimal towel sharing. Similarly, their “wipe and go” policy for dishwashing must save many thousands of liters of water a month, and gives guests a choice as to whether they go for “flavour+” dishes (with minimally increased risk of food poisoning), or “visibly clean” dishes (with similar levels of risk). Rooms are air conditioned for your comfort, without any of those pesky environmental features that so often ruin a holiday. Want to set your room’s temperature at 15 degrees Celsius all day, while you’re out, with the balcony door wide open at the peak of summer? At Mizo, you can. Glorious. The bathrooms have sufficient space for a slender adult human, with some thoughtful touc
