Ohope Beach Motel

We had stayed here a few times before over the last nine years. This trip we booked through wotif. We arrived and were taken down the back to what I can only discribe as a converted garage that looked out from the bedroom onto a bank. The woman told us it was the family suite but as there were only the two of us... She locked the extra room. I wasn't happy, it was not the queen studio we had had in the past, the same as the pictures we had seen on the site. She told us we got the grotty by comparison room because we booked through *******! She told my husband she could see I wasn't happy but we could have the room I believed I was booking if we paid MORE. I said forget it. We unloaded into the room, I was fuming, then she turned up & told us she had done some juggling and we could have the queen suite at no extra cost... Probably long enough to see my other reviews. She lied, she told us we were in the family suite & when I said I booked a queen suite she said it was a queen suite. She said they were fully booked but managed to juggle things so we could have the other room. Rubbish, the no vacancy sign never went on in all the time we were there & the grotty room wasn't used, there were other queen suites not used & yes we checked. We went out & our room was entered and a window that could be easily accessed from outside was opened risking our belongings, the only "servicing" that was done was the rubbish bag that had a couple of things in it was removed. The price has dam near doubled since our first stay but apart from converting a garage nothing has been done. The lounge chairs were dirty. Don't bother. It's 6km to Whakatane, stay there.

An older style Motel that was for sale during our stay. It is very comfortable and relaxing. Quiet during our stay. A short walk 15 minutes to dairy and couple of cafes. Loved the Moxi cafe good coffee and very friendly. 2 hot plates for cooking if so desired. Outside table nice to sit for drink or dinner. Only negative was being older and for sale in need of a few maintenance issues cobwebs and bird poo on windows. My personal pethate dirty window tracks. Felt like a seaside batch. Site may get redeveloped in the future.

I do not care if there’s a tiny bathroom. I do not care if there’s a little bit that looks worn. I want to stay here again and again. We will reminisce about this stay for weeks to come. We were in unit 1–facing the beach and with its own private drive. It was heaven. We slept listening to the waves, we cooked our own breakfasts in the cute little kitchen, we walked across to the picnic tables overlooking the ocean and shared a bottle of wine, and we truly believe we spent two nights at the best beach on earth. There’s free boogie boards, laundry facilities (in unit one they are in-house), a full sized fridge, and comfy beds. For a family of three, our unit and our experience was just perfect.

This is one of the best spots in Ohope. Very handy to everywhere in Ohope and Whakatane The owners are so helpful to make your stay enjoyable. The studio room was very good bathroom is large. Milk in a jug in the fridge along with glass of orange juice I will be back again Remember to book early Thank you

What a find. Didn’t book just rocked up and greeted by the wonderful Wanda. She was so welcoming and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and the beds were amazing. We were right opposite the beautiful beach with our very own chairs and fire pit which was only for the Motel visitors. Such a lovely way to spend watching the sunset with a glass of NZ Pinot Gris. Wanda popped over for a chat while enjoying the fire. Not a lot of eating places but just a 5min drive over the mountain to Whakatane there were lots of choices. Such a wonderful stay. Firstly, a great location and outlook - only the sound of the waves... Great to have a generous-sized bathroom but at the expense of space in the rest of the unit. Fortunately I am not in a wheelchair as I would have trouble getting down the side of the double bed (which is also very high - I am average height for a man but my feet could not reach the floor). However the bathroom lacks the necessary safety rails in both the shower and toilet (see photos) and T felt unsafe - needs rails on the two walls of the shower and a fold-out rail between the toilet and shower. Best planned before lining done in case extra fixing dwangs required but can be retrofitted... important that these are the correct height (see NZ Standard 4121:2001 More power outlets are needed and best if these are doubles...
