Service is perfect and took care of everything well. Location wise not so convenient and better for self driving, otherwise cannot go anywhere nearby. One point should improve is the check out time is 10:30AM, which is way earlier than most hotel and may cause some inconvenience for some travelers.

This small, beautiful hotel is tastefully decorated with Japanese art and objects. We chose Western-style beds. The room was spacious and airy. Sandals are provided for walking in the hallways; no shoes or sandals on the room’s traditional mats.
Breakfast and dinner are high cuisine, artfully presented in private dining rooms. The set dinner menu is 7 courses and way too much food, even with small individual portions of each serving (similar to a tasting menu, but highly traditional Japanese). The sashimi was the freshest I have ever eaten. The chef accommodated our dietary restriction of no meat. Shuttle vans can be arranged for pick up and drop off at train stations and local shrines. The staff’s English is limited so find a good translation app.

Excellent staff, location and facilities. We enjoyed the food and the private hot tub on our balcony. All of the staff were very friendly, and went above and beyond with any request.
Just avoid getting a massage. The masseuse was horrible. She had my wife keep her robe on and then covered her with towels before roughly rubbing her. She ended up with rug burns on her feet and a kinked neck. If you can avoid that disaster you will have a wonderful time here.

What an amazing stay! From the moment we arrived to checkout we were treated to warm and friendly service, every amenity we could want, a spacious and beautiful suite, indoor and outdoor onsens, and phenomenal meals. Highly recommend. We’ll be back!

Great traditional-yet-luxurious ryokan near the UNESCO temples of Nikko. The room was amazing: it had a private hot tub, tatami mats, a massage chair, and even binoculars. Dinner was a delight, a classical tasting menu full of surprises. My only complaints are about the shuttle system. Hotel is extremely inflexible in how and when you can get a ride to and from the sites and train station: other than a couple of fixed time slots, they make you either walk or take a taxi. Expected a bit more in this regard. They also very much rushed me out the door in the morning which went counter to the relaxing experience I’d had. Other than this, easy to recommend.

Had a wonderful experience at Okunoin. Service is superb, the meals are delicious (too much food actually!), and very pretty baths. I enjoyed the private bath at night with the water mirror. Highly recommend.

It is a great hotel, recommended to everyone. Good service. While I lost my jacket after checkout, the staff brought it back to me to the train station, awesome!

Hôtel de style Japonais. Kimono et bains chauds. Cuisine japonaise au restaurant (on aime ou pas mais les surprises sont au rendez-vous). Perdu au milieu de la forêt dans un cadre enchanteur.

We had an amazing experience staying here for 2 nights at the beginning of our Japan trip. The service was exceptional, the food was amazing, and the hotel grounds were beautiful. My room was on the first floor so had a private onsen on the terrace of which we definitely took advantage. The hotel staff was extremely hospitable and accommodating. They had a free shuttle to the 2 local train stations and the nearby shrine area, which was very convenient. The shuttle does run only during certain times, stopping at 5:30pm so keep that in mind. The cost of our room also included Japanese dinner and breakfast, all very delicious. We were joking that this set the bar for the trip too high without us having to make any decisions. If you're in the Nikko area and looking for a place to stay, highly recommend the Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa. We will certainly be back.

This is my only ryokan experience but I can’t imagine anything better. We do not speak Japanese but everyone was so kind and patient and amazingly helpful! You can book different types of rooms, we had a private onsen on our balcony that was lovely. The shared bath was also very nice. There is a private bath you can book but we didn’t need it. They have free books, lounges, drinks, and massage chairs. The front desk was very helpful in arranging taxis and helping us navigate. The kaiseki breakfast and dinner was great- try new foods and see what you like! You won’t be hungry regardless. Highly recommend if staying in Nikko!!

I have just checked out from this hotel, they asked to pay in cash which did not indicate this in their website or inform us before we check in. I saw the credit card machine and asked why cannot pay by credit card since they have one. After expressing my displeasure, they finally allowed me to do so. I guess they prefer cash than credit card. No service after this episode. They also did not help out with my luggage.

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese resort experience in an area laden with history and lore, this is the place to book: rooms with tatami beds and sliding partitions, private and public hot springs, relax rooms, lounges and an inner landscaped garden dotted with fish ponds and interesting vegetation. Plus, of course, today’s necessities like Wi-Fi, climate control, sentient toilet seats and a full array of quality complimentary cosmetics. Based upon a casual observation, the place seems to target primarily couples looking for rest and relaxation, but worked just as well for our family of four, which includes two teenagers. As everywhere else we went, the staff was always very attentive and ready to assist however possible. LOCATION: offering both privacy and convenience, the hotel is located along an unassuming country road, a ten minute walk from the main thoroughfare connecting Nikko with Lake Chōzenji and served by local buses, with a stop just 100 meters down the road. Buses generally run two or three times an hour, but without a regular pattern, so plan accordingly (the front desk, of course, has all the schedules and route information handy). The hotel is also within walking distance of the shrine complex that is Nikko’s main attraction. ROOM: we spent two nights in an Aqua Deluxe Suite, which accommodates four guests in two separate partitioned areas, one with Western beds and the other with tatami beds set up every night. The room also features a sitting room and separate toilet, sink and shower areas. We had to be a little creative in storing our suitcases (pack lightly when travelling around Japan!) but the room actually offered more storage space than initially observed. The key feature of the room is an outdoor hot bath tub overlooking a private man-made pond closed off by a wall, offering complete privacy. After a day of hikes, it was a pleasure to soak in the tub surrounded by nothing but the sound of cascading water and chirping insects. AMENITIES: breakfast and dinner were included in the room rate, and I recommend taking full advantage of them. All the meals, with a set rotating menu, offered a great variety of what we took as local fish, meat and vegetable dishes, all prepared with quality ingredients and artfully served in private rooms. And don’t be deceived by the small portions: you will end up eating a lot! All meals are served at fixed hours, requiring advance reservations. The hot springs offer both indoors and outdoor basins: in a place like this, just wear the hotel-provided yukata and slippers and embrace the Japanese way of relaxation.
