Erica and Travis both work high-stress jobs, but as soon as they arrive at their gorgeous big cabin in a hilltop community high above the Blue Ridge valley… that stress just melts away. “When we hit the mountains,” Travis tells me when we sit down to chat about Hidden Hills, “it’s instant relief and relaxation.” I can certainly see how the day-to-day details of a busy life start to disappear once you’re 2,200 feet up in the mountains, enjoying the warmth of a fire (or hot tub) with your loved ones. And Travis’s and Erica’s loved ones are the whole reason for Hidden Hills. With two kids, and two pups (Doodle mixes), they decided to create the perfect family friendly space that they themselves would want to stay in — and they did just that. Travis comes from a close-knit family of seven, and even as an adult he is happiest when he’s surrounded by friends and loved ones. When he and Erica travel, it’s with other couples with kids and dogs — and Hidden Hills is exactly the kind of place they would look for. “When we come up here, it’s to get away and make memories,” he says, “and what is more memorable than getting together with some of your favorite people and enjoying these North Georgia towns, the outdoors, and everything else around here? There are two lakes to swim in, woods, hiking… My wife loves wine, and we are right in the heart of wine country — the cabin is literally five minutes from our favorite vineyard. It’s perfect.” *** When they got the cabin, Travis tells me, it wasn’t quite as family friendly as they’d wanted. There wasn’t much for kids to do. Two bunk beds, an assortment of games, a foosball table, and one pizza oven later, Hidden Hills is an absolute wonderland for a kid. I ask Travis about TVs and video games. “Yeah, there are fancy smart TV’s and everything,” he says, “and you can plug a gaming console right in, I suppose, but when my kids are up here, you know what they do? They’re not playing video games — they’re skipping stones!” Travis laughs. “My younger one, all he wants to do is go to the lake and collect rocks. I’m not even kidding. One day, I am doing a load of laundry and I hear, ‘tink tink tink.’ I go to look. The kid threw a pair of shorts in there with a pocketful of little flat stones he found by the water, and they’re all just tumbling around in the washer.” He smiles at the memory. “This is what kids really love doing. They can play their video games when they’re back in the city.” Hidden Hills isn’t just kids’ paradise, though. Nearly half a mile above sea level, everybody gets to enjoy a kickass view (Travis’s words) made even better if you’re admiring it from the sunken hot tub on the deck (glass of a local chardonnay in hand, perhaps?) The wraparound verandas are a perfect gathering point for the Golden Hour, and when it gets cool you can head inside to the fireplace or down to the firepit to laugh and tell stories well into the starry night. The beds are comfy, the linens soft, and the sleeping is good when you’re breathing that clean mountain air. The modern kitchen is stocked and ready to feed a hungry crew of hikers and swimmers and rock collectors, and the island bar and leather couches are great places to hang out before and after the feasts. Time at Hidden Hills doesn’t pass at exactly the same rate as it does elsewhere. It’s somehow both slower and faster. Slow as you’re making lifelong memories… but the last day of your stay will inevitably arrive far too quickly. Pro Tips & Local Wisdom ● Scenic nature and fun outdoors, galore: hike the Appalachian Trail, explore Vogel State Park, and boat, fish, and swim in nearby Lake Chatuge ● Hike, then take in the view from Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak ● Small-town charm with big perks: Blairsville is a mountain gem known for locally owned shops, restaurants, and community events; Blairsville is your jumping off point for lots of outdoor adventure — and it boasts a thriving arts and food scene ● Sour grapes (and grains): enjoy a glass of wine and breathtaking views at Crane Creek Vineyards; get in the mountain spirit at Grandaddy Mimm’s Distilling Co.; and have a pint or two of the local brew (and some live music, likely as not) at Blairsville Brewing Company The Small Print ● The Sounds of Silence: please limit outdoor use of speakers and other amplified sound equipment to 8:00 am through 10:00 pm, Sunday through Thursday; 8:00 am through 11:00 pm, Friday and Saturday ● You love your furry friends, and we’d love to host one or a couple of them. We charge a $75 cleaning fee per dog, per day. Cats make us sneeze: please leave them with grandma (or an automatic feeder) ● Please keep your pups close or leashed — especially on properties that aren’t fenced in. If you plan to leave them alone at the cabin, please make sure to bring a crate ● We put together a starter kit for your arrival (5 trash bags under kitchen sink, 1 roll of paper towels per kitchen, 3 rolls of t.p. per bathroom, small bars of body soap) — please anticipate any needs beyond that, and stock up in town or bring from home ● Suds and beans can be very personal choices: please bring your own laundry detergent and coffee ● You’ll find an ample supply of dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap ● Need us? We’re a phone call (and stone’s throw) away, 7 days a week, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Give us a buzz and we’ll be there in a jiff to help you with any unforeseen detail From our entire team, a big thank-you for choosing SVR — and booking so much more than a rental property. Born and bred here in Georgia, we ensure our clients feel the warmth of our southern hospitality and have unforgettable stays in beautiful homes — in one of the prettiest landscapes the country has to offer. After nearly 10,000 stays and thousands of glowing reviews, we’re prouder than ever of what we do. We love North Georgia — and we love sharing her with you. In each of our cabins you’ll find an “Experience the Mountains” manual full of suggestions about local attractions such as hikes and sightseeing, as well as our favorite restaurants in town. Want to connect with us about anything from the layout of the property to our favorite local merlot? Give us a shout. Someone on our team of locals (possibly me) will be happy to chat with you, answer any questions, and help you book your next dream mountain vacation. We can’t wait to see you soon in our neck of the woods… and mountains, and lakes, and so much more.
