My spouse and I stayed at this lovely agriturismo at the end of a group tour of Sicily and Southern Italy. We greatly enjoyed the couple of days we spent there and wish our stay could have been longer. Situated at the end of a long driveway, the estate is nestled in a grove of ancient, gnarled olive trees that seem to still be producing, along with almond, lemon, and mandarin orange trees. You can hear and see a wide variety of birds. The setting could not be more idyllic or relaxing. Although it was a little too cold for swimming when we were there, the pool is beautiful. The food at Masseria Santa Teresa was exceptional. Along with deftly prepared Pugliese and vegetarian ("0 Mile Diet") specialties, Luigi's kitchen produced some truly innovative dishes. We're still thinking about the salmon crudo with dots of guacamole and fresh ricotta and a side of spiced wakame that we had for lunch. The service also went above and beyond. One morning I got to breakfast just as everything was being cleared away. Vito, who was in charge of the wait staff, saw what was happening and sent me a full plate of goodies. He took excellent care of everyone in our group. Our large room provided ample closet space, and the bed was comfortable. As we had seen in other Italian accommodations, however, form tended to trump function. For instance, the bathroom looked great but was hampered by a serious lack of shelving. I'm not sure if the woven bags provided for toiletries were supposed to be taken into the shower, which had no shelves for soap and shampoo. Likewise, the sink had no soap dish. Fortunately, these minor issues didn't affect our overall impression of the estate. We would be happy to return, perhaps when the weather is warm enough for swimming.
