Molly, We last came to Mackinaw Island in 2007. We were gifted a weekend at the Grand Hotel. We’ve stayed at downtown hotels in the past and I have stayed at the conference center when I was an MEA and NEA teacher delegate. So I have some appreciation for what Mackinaw Island has to offer. By far, the Inn at Stonecliffe tops them all. Anyone who has not visited Mackinaw Island or not been there for a few years. You are in for a great surprise. Now about the Inn At Stonecliffe. We had a lovely time. Every staff member was polite, attentive, and asked if we needed anything. I am a firm believer in customer service and willing to pay for great service. Your staff did not disappoint. I want to mention a few staff who stood out. Emily (reception desk) was as sweet and kind as they come. Helpful with any question. She walked us to our building and made sure all our questions were answered. Gave her an origami heart. She was genuinely thrilled and made me smile. Alan (bar tender) and I are both MSU grads and had so much fun chatting at the bar. He did a masterful job handling some DJT supporters with grace and a smile. (He did look at me and we both rolled our eyes). He raved about his mentor Jasynth who I met the next day as he had a day off. I made an origami heart for his girlfriend. He said she will love it. Jasynth (sp), was a delight and she shared a lot of her life story with me. I loved hearing about her growing up in Costa Rica and her adventures in the USA. I asked her about her accent and how she ended up working at the Inn. Alan raved about her as a mentor and I can understand why after spending time with her. Made her an origami heart, a bird, a frog, and a flower from cash register tape. The staff at the Backyard (outdoor restaurant) were all attentive and friendly. We sat at the BAR seating to be able to watch them at work. The arugula salad as simple as it was, was surprisingly delicious. The margarita pizza was equally good. I would encourage reception staff to promote your restaurants as they are also part of a great experience. Dinner at the Straits was one of the best fish meals we’ve eaten. The sauce with the trout was stellar. And those oysters with the pickle relish. What a pleasant surprise. The food manager came by to ask us how we liked them and I told him that I have never tasted anything close to that with oysters. The setting for the property is extraordinarily and we loved walking the grounds. The ride to and from town is the shortest 40 minutes because of the scenery and conversation with fellow travelers. A bonus was we got to experience changing the horse team. Loved that too. BTW rides to and from town are included in the price and leave every hour. Luggage is handled from the time you drop it off at the boat to the time it gets delivered to your room and likewise returning home. So all in all we had a fabulous time. We believe that this experience easily tops the Grand Hotel or any other hotel on the i
