I dont usually write a review but in this instance I feel I should, as this hotel has so much potential with the right management. Booked a 3 night dinner B&B package for New Year's. The positives are the location and scenery. The negatives outweighted the positives on this occasion however. The place should have been buzzing for New Years but it was the opposite. Overall the place lacked warmth and the personal touch. Specifically: Caseys Bar/Bistro/restaurant was cold each day and evening. No fires lighting, despite bad weather outside. Customers were wearing coats and jumpers to keep warm having dinner, even though staff were made aware of the problem. There was a musician setting up in the bar on NY eve after 10pm but we were too cold to stay on and enjoy it or have an after dinner drink. The dinner menu was the same each night bar a small variation on NY eve, no specials. The food itself was average quality. Breakfast was very disappointing, very basic, and lacked the personal touch. Everything including tea/coffee was self service. There was no fresh fruit or pastries, just tinned mandarins mixed with tinned Pears, and a single bowl of natural yogurt, all edible but not a nice experience at all. The cooked food was OK but the eggs needed replenishing and were cold. The room (127) was adequate but lacked in places - no milk for tea, curtain rail broken on one end, only one pillow each (2 spare pillows in wardrobe had no pillowcases - this was rectified after contacting reception). Room service wasn't done over our stay. We were in the room when they arrived and we said we would be leaving shortly and would leave sign on the door so they would know. However they did not return to do the room. Also, we had to step over a hoover left on the corridor. This hotel, if standards improved, would be an amazing place. I hate the phrase rip off Ireland, but that was the dominant feeling we were left with. By way of contrast, we went to Roundwood Stores and cafe on two days of our stay to enjoy roaring fires, excellent coffee and reasonably priced selection of cakes etc. The place was booming and full of atmosphere.. and warm! Together with the beauty surrounding Glendalough Hotel, this could be a magical place to stay. What a missed opportunity by management here to have something special in Glendalough...people like us just won't return.
