I wanted to visit the Outer Banks for my 50th birthday because I'd never been there before. Naturally, I looked first for hotels where I could utilize my Hilton Honors account. I chose this hotel, not only because of it being a Hilton property, but also because it is so close to the beach and right next to Kitty Hawk Pier. I chose to rate the hotel 3 stars because of how unclean the room was and for how indifferently the staff treated me. I stayed in room 516, which offered an amazing view of the ocean and pier. The room was laid-out well, but it was just not very clean. There were crumbs and crackers under the couch. The desk chair had a brown stain on the seat. The balcony hadn't been swept and had as much sand and debris as the beach. These issues were remedied after I reported them. The night front desk staff was super-stingy with bottles of water even though I was a Hilton Honors member. The GM never returned my 2 voicemails when I inquired about a room charge that the front desk staff was unable to figure out. The charge was eventually taken care of by falling off my bill a week after I checked out. The dining staff was amazing! They more than made up for their counterparts at the front desk. The food, in particular the breakfast, was very flavorful and hot. One evening I got a cheeseburger to go and it was really good! Other notes: The Surf Shack Tiki Grill was never open. A lot of people sat outside to enjoy the fire pit, which was a great place to make new friends. The parking lot was always full, but because location sells, that was not a total surprise. Despite check-out time being 11am, I had to make an extra trip downstairs after coming down to collect a luggage cart because my room keys were deactivated at 10am. Overall I'd probably stay somewhere else if I returned to Kitty Hawk. I felt that I should have been treated better as a Hilton Honors Member who was staying for his birthday, especially after spending $1,400 for 3 nights.
