Es war einfach ganz wunderbar in diesem traumhaften original erhaltenen historischen Haveli inmitten des Forts von Jaisalmer wohnen zu dürfen. Die Familie ist überaus gastfreundlich und äußerst hilfsbereit. Shubham hat sich sogar die Zeit genommen, uns durchs Fort zu führen und hat uns damit einen ganz besonderen persönlichen Eindruck vermittelt. Das Essen ist fantastisch, die Blicke der Dachterrassen wunderschön, unser Zimmer (die Maharani Suite) wie aus 1001 Nacht und alles sehr sauber. Dadurch, dass keine größeren Sanierungsmaßnahmen vorgenommen wurden, darf *** keinen Luxus erwarten, dafür genießt *** den Luxus, in einem unverfälschten Denkmal zu wohnen.Vielen herzlichen Dank für die ganz besonderen und unvergesslichen Tage!

Hotel Suraj is much more than a hotel and has been the most amazing place we have ever stayed on holiday. Shubham, his family and colleagues made us feel an extended part of the family and would constantly go out of their way to make our stay as easy and comfortable as possible. Their haveli, where we stayed, is a spectacular home with fabulous rooms. We would recommend anyone going to India to visit Jaisalmer and, if possible, to stay at Hotel Suraj. Our genuine thanks to all at Hotel Suraj for making our stay so wonderful.

The Maharajá room was amazing! Gorgeous, historic, huge and confortable. We felt like prince and princess. Huge bathroom with hot water working perfectly. Delicious breakfast in the room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Too bad we could only stay one night

As a Kiwi family of 5 it was recommended we stay in the fort in Jaisalmer. We are so glad we did. We spent 2 nights at this beautiful and historic Haveli located in an amazing series of narrow but beautiful alleyways within the fort. It felt medieval and very special. The suite rooms were massive and elaborate and made us feel royal for at least a couple of days! We wish we could have stayed longer. The family who have owned this Haveli since it was built were truly kind and so knowledgeable, taking us for a tour around the fort as part of the experience. We cannot recommend highly enough. We will be back….!

I LOVED this hotel. It's run by a family who actually lives on site. You can go across the street to have your meals on the rooftop they also own which is directly overlooking one of the 9 Jain temples in old town. Dinner is cooked by the mother and is the best food I've had in my entire trip. Everybody is so nice and kind. The son went out of his way to print my travel documents ahead of my flight. He helped with all the questions we had and offered a free guided tour of old town. You could tell this family cared about the history of their city. Really awesome. And the King room....Quite the experience to stay in this massive 500 year old space willed with columns and old flower paintings everywhere. Really wow!

I did not stay at Hotel Suraj, HOWEVER, on recommendation from family members who had stayed there, we popped in to see if we could have a look around, as they had such a great experience. Honestly, once we arrived and were greeted by Shubum the owner, we really wish had stayed at Hotel Suraj. He happily welcomed us in, showed us around the incredible 500-year-old property and told us such in depth history about the place and Jaisalmer more widely, we left fascinated! So many artefacts and pictures from his family's history within the property, it really should be a museum and him a guide! We had beers watching the sun set on the roof while chatting with Shubum and had such a lovely time. Honestly, if at all possible stay here!

To be clear: I didn’t stay here. However, I was fortunate enough to have an overwhelmingly positive experience with the owner one evening, where I had beer on his rooftop, and I was shown around the haveli. I already had somewhere to stay. So it was this family run business’ passion for their 500 year property, and their desire to welcome people to their ancestral home that prompted such generosity and interesting conversation. The haveli is nestled in the heart of the fort, and comprises of 4 spacious bedrooms, which we were shown. Each of the rooms preserving the natural character of the building, with painted murals and original built in closets adorning the walls. I’m writing this review because I was so moved by the host’s care for his ancestral home, his love of sharing it with people, and his devotion to offering tourists an authentic and value for money experience of Jaisalmer. It’s a humble home converted into a 4 room guest house, and so the amenities might look a little basic, but your stay would be more than made up for by the family who run it and the history of the building that beats within.

What would you prefer 5 star corporate or half arsed corporate? would you rather a direct line to the great Indian past, to the soul of what it means to be great, wise and good? Would you like to take a polished vacation in steel, glass and chrome or would you rather know that the craftsman used skills older than the hills? Gentle skills that don’t harm the environment that aren’t sociopathic and toxic. Would you like the sweet sleep of the ancients or the anxious stress of never being satisfied? Would you like to keep company with the 18th descendant and owner of a rapidly disappearing and threatened Rajput hotelier? Do you want a lift or the kindness of strangers? A desert or a wasteland? If you prefer the former you will have stopped reading by now. If the latter you must spend some time at the Hotel Suraj in the fort of Jaisalmer. It doesn’t get much sweeter than this. Expect nothing less than awe and delight as you walk in the footsteps of ancients and hold hands with what it means to relax at the edge of the desert in pools of sunlight piercing through unexpected portals of fine filigree. There is little that is modern here but everything that is magic.

We arrived late in the evening but Shubhan guide us to their haveli. If you want an authentic stay with super nice people: this is the place to go. Every guest gets a free welcome tour in Jaiselmer fort from Shubhan, which was very nice. As we left he brought all our stuff downhill for us. A great stay!
