As its name suggests, this is a chilled and relaxing place for a short stopover. I stayed here for only two days but enjoyed my short stay. The location, right on the water, is superb, and most rooms have ocean views. The setting is delightful, with a small swimming pool overlooking the ocean, well kept gardens, thatched roofs of the buildings and the mountains of Mahebourg in the background. An ideal spot for getting your “mojo” back before embarking on the next leg of your journey! It’s fairly close to the airport and my taxi ride took about 15 minutes in both directions. The manager, Mr Nate and his assistants were all friendly, obliging and helpful. The free and generous buffet breakfast every morning in the sunny little dining room, which also overlooks the ocean, was an added bonus. Inside though, it’s a slightly different story. The accommodation is modest, and my room was small. It had an en suite bathroom and an ancient cupboard, whose door slammed into the front door every time I opened it. Inside the cupboard were a few musty shelves, some old and bent hangars, a rusty kettle with a broken lid that had to be prised open each time, to be able to fill it up with water, two tea cups and spoons, a handful of tea bags, a bottle of water (v handy since you wouldn’t want to drink the water from the taps) and a jar of congealed coffee in the tiny, leaky bar fridge at the bottom. And a safe, which never worked, and was eventually replaced with a new one. The little balcony had a round table and two chairs that were too big for the space and had to be constantly moved around to be able to open and close the double doors. The bathroom was also fairly basic and annoyingly, apart from one small cake of soap, no other toiletries were supplied. There’s a small TV on the wall, but I couldn’t find any English channels. The lighting was weak, and for a desk you have a little slab of wood under the TV and the mirror. And if you find the noise of the overhead fan too intense, there’s always an air con, and in my room, at least it was easy to use and it worked well. Although at night when it got cooler, I preferred the fan. But it was fairly quiet and I slept well, despite the rather loud clunking and knocking noise that the fan made, and the occasional sound of stray dogs barking into the night. In Mauritius, there are masses of dogs, but they are not kept as pets, instead they roam around as strays and no-one can control the noise that they make. The internet connection was spotty, so if you’re planning on doing work that requires a reliable internet connection, forget it. It drops in and out. Mahebourg itself is a small town with little to offer tourists, apart from a well-stocked supermarket called “Loy Yeung”, where prices, by Aussie standards, were quite cheap. For example, a can of local lager was less that $3, a fresh, crunchy baguette, just a few cents. But don’t expect much else in Mahebourg. Even trying to walk into the town was a ha
