I booked Franz Josef Oasis as a New Year’s Eve treat, expecting a premium experience, but it fell far short of expectations. The room was dated and generic, with only one piece of art on the wall and minimal decor, creating a stark, uninspiring atmosphere that lacked any charm or sense of comfort. The bedside lamp and wall light didn’t work, and the table near the fireplace was unstable and poorly constructed. The “fireplace” was just a noisy fan heater with fake flames, offering neither warmth nor ambiance. Noise was a constant issue. The fridge ran loudly, turning on and off repeatedly through the night, which was extremely disruptive. The bathroom fan stayed on for 10 minutes after the light was turned off, adding to the constant noise. The bed was the worst part. The mattress dipped so badly in the middle that it needed two thick underlays but was still incredibly uncomfortable. At 50kg, I found it unbearable; anyone heavier would likely find it impossible to sleep on. Privacy was another concern, as one window faced the neighboring guest’s car parked just a meter away. On top of that, when I went to close the curtains, part of them fell off the rail. While someone came promptly to fix it, I had to explain how to do it, which added to the sense of poor attention to detail. Having stayed at The Anchorage in Fox Glacier for almost half the price, which was far more comfortable, charming, and welcoming, this stay was a huge disappointment. Lastly, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern in the management’s responses to negative reviews. Rather than taking feedback as an opportunity to improve, their replies tend to be defensive, often justifying issues instead of acknowledging guest concerns. I hope this feedback will encourage genuine acknowledgment and improvements, rather than more excuses.
