If you are blessed with being able to work remotely, and have enough imagination to want more than a pasteurized resort experience while you're doing it, work from Jack's Apartments in Essaouira, Morocco. I worked here for 6 weeks, from late May through early July 2021. I sat in my lovely little living room in Apartment 2, looked at the surf, monitored the fishing fleet going in and out, and marveled at beautiful sunsets almost every night. The equipped kitchen meant I could buy fresh produce, bread, spices, meat and newly-pressed olive oil in the market, and cook, which is what I did for almost all my meals. I did have some very good dinners out within a short walk of the apartment, too. Jack's Apartments is situated in the Medina of Essaouira, just off the Kasbah, and a stone's throw from the scenic ramparts with their antique Spanish cannons. The apartment was cleaned daily by friendly staff, and my registration experience was very good with helpful Nadia. There is a sunny, shared terrace with tables, chairs and lounging chairs that has a spectacular view. My SO and I spent many hours up there "monitoring" the fishing fleet as the boats went out and came back in. Tip: *Request apartment 2 if you are working solo or with an SO, or Apartment 3 if you are coming with friends and family. Both have the ocean literally right out the window. Pro: *Good WiFi. I spent every evening working on California time, so from about 4pm to 2am Morocco time. Much of that time I was on Zoom video conference calls, and almost all of them were flawless. About the same quality as my broadband WiFi at home in San Francisco. *Great fresh food shopping, walking around the markets in the Medina. *Easy to get a travel COVID test at a clinic I could easily walk to, for the trip back to the States. *Very low rates of COVID in Essaouria. I do not believe there was a reported case for at least a month when I was there. *Right by the lively Kasbah, fishing boat harbor and the Ramparts. Con: *Apartments 1, 2, and 3 seems to share WiFi, so if my connection got spotty my guess is that the usage was heavy in the other apartments. Did not happen often but when it did it was rough.
