Hill View House Bed & Breakfast

On behalf of Brenda Bardsley. I thoroughly enjoyed my 5 night’s stay here back in early September. I had the single room with its own small ensuite, and it had everything I could possibly have wanted, was beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. As a vegetarian the Continental breakfast was perfect and set me up for the day with plenty of fresh fruit and Jonathan’s famous homemade granola which I’m still missing! The owner, Jonathan was a wonderful host and really went out of his way to make my stay as perfect as possible, and as a single traveller his kindness is something I will always remember. I fell in love with Dartmouth and the surrounding area and having somewhere as welcoming as Hill View House made all the difference. Thank you Jonathan!

Beautiful room and wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit. We were really well looked after by our host. The weather was the only slightly negative thing, but there was still plenty to enjoy around Dartmouth - great walks and ferry and steam train trips.

We can only echo the positive feedback given to TripAdvisor by other guests; Jonathan’s exemplary hospitality, the home made granola, the Art Deco theme and overall cleanliness are endorsed absolutely. In booking through an intermediary web site we were not aware of the breakfast arrangements. We had our hearts set on a full English breakfast in the morning - not a continental breakfast. We can’t deduct a star for that really, but in our defence the “B&B’s” we are used to usually offer a fry-up so bear this in mind. What is preventing the fifth star (in our humble opinion) is the sash windows. I opened mine which opened fully and freely. So what I hear you ask? Well, the cill height is low, the windows are tall and I found myself looking down on a 50ft sheer drop. Vertigo hit in immediately. Most hotels these days have safety limiters on opening windows. I closed the window at bedtime lest I took a wrong turn in the dead of the night. The only other minor thing to mention (and only because it is mentioned as a positive feature on the web site) is that the TV screens are the same size as my iPad. Please do not let the continental breakfast, the tiny TV thing and the huge opening window spoil our review. The granola and fruit is better for you than a fry-up, too much TV is bad for your eyesight, and apparently sky-diving is exhilarating. Hill View House and Jonathan deserve at least 4 healthy stars and we would recommend it on balance.

After an unforeseen VERY late evening arrival (1045pm!) I felt immediately warmly welcomed by owner Jonathan, when he greeted me. The super comfy bed in my single room was much appreciated and was the start of a wonderful stay at the unique Hillview House B&B. The decor is lovely and also tasteful, with a mix of more modern and traditional furniture and fittings. Jonathan really can't do enough for his guests and there was such a personal touch from the 1st morning with the scrummy and substantial continental-style breakfast, including warm croissants. I SO miss the home-made granola, with natural yoghurt, fresh fruit and milk as a 'starter' and Jonathan picked up on comments I made about the beautiful, classical music playing (by local resident & skilled violinist, Patricia Canlan) and I have the personally signed wonderful Reflections cd as a lovely souvenir of my 1st holiday in Dartmouth. The room was clean and very comfortable with a great shower and a radio as well as a tv, with the small fridge very useful, not only for the fresh milk provided for tea/coffee in the room, but also as there were evenings when I didn't want a big evening meal, so could purchase something lighter in one of the local town centre supermarkets. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hillview House B&B and will definitely return, when I return to Dartmouth. It was a great holiday! Hillview House B&B is very central - literally a short (6/7 minutes) downhill walk to the town centre, but a steep one on the return of course, so an ideal location, but probably not suitable for guests with mobility issues. Although Dartmouth town centre itself is flat, all roads leading off of it provide spectacular views, but are all steep, so although a 'must' to explore, would possibly not make Dartmouth the ideal holiday location for guests with mobility issues/equipment.

Fabulous stay at Hill view. Jonathan is a wonderful host and really goes out of his way to make sure you have a fabulous stay. He was incredibly helpful showing us where to park when we left as we were spending our last day exploring the area. Great continental breakfast too! Very convenient location. Room was spacious and fabs provided too! Thanks Jonathan!

We found this gem online and booked direct. The owner Jonathan was very accommodating and flexible. He offered us a reasonable room price and although we didn't have breakfast with him, we did see the service and it looked wonderful. The room and ensuite were excellent and Jonathan was receptive to our needs. Wonderful.
