I am writing this review to bring attention to a deeply distressing incident that occurred during my family’s stay at The Hideout Sigiriya located at Palutawa Road Rangirigama , Kimbissa Sigiriya on the night of June 21, 2024. Although I intended to write sooner, the emotional distress and financial impact from the incident required me to focus on other pressing matters. What was meant to be a relaxing family getaway turned into a horrifying ordeal when we discovered that our room had been broken into, and several of our valuable belongings were stolen. This incident not only caused significant financial loss but also left us emotionally shaken, especially as our children witnessed the aftermath, intensifying our trauma. I was extremely disappointed to find that the hotel’s security measures were grossly inadequate. There were no security personnel on-site, and the CCTV system was not properly functioning or covering the full property, compromising guest safety. Additionally, the safe deposit box provided was a small, portable container with a key, offering little to no security for valuables. Despite my repeated requests, the main gate of the property was left open, further exacerbating the lack of security—a glaring oversight for a property registered with the tourism board. Immediately following the incident, I reported the matter to the hotel manager (Mr Ranjith) and hotel staff, but their response was unsatisfactory and failed to address our urgent needs and concerns by initially saying that no backup is there for the CCTV which led for us and the cops who were present at the location to reach out to the neighboring property Jetwing Vil Uyana , where they were very supportive and accommodative to help us in that hour of the night. However after checking the CCTV cameras at Jetwing and upon returning back to the hotel, we kind of realized that staff in hideout sigiriya was just pretending to act clueless reference to the operating of the CCTV cameras, having probed them further and questioning on the options in the CCTV unit , led to getting the Video clip of the robbery coming through. This raised concerns that the staff may have been deliberately uncooperative at the outset. Despite assurances of safety and security, the reality we faced was vastly different. The absence of operational security measures and the mishandling of the incident by the staff reflects a severe breach of duty of care. After filing a formal police complaint at the Sigiriya police station and submitting a letter to the hotel owners requesting resolution, the response we received from the owner’s (and the daughter of the owner who just called us once on the 23rd June) was shockingly dismissive. It felt the hotel had washed its hands of any responsibility, leaving us to bear the emotional and financial burden of this ordeal alone. This experience has left my family traumatized and disappointed, and I would caution potential guests to think twice before booking
