Hotel Spa la Casa del Rector Almagro

"The Hotel is a rather odd, and not entirely successful mixture, of the historic and modern. Location is good, an old building in a quiet street (which you could easily park on) although covered secure parking is also available at rear of Hotel –for a fee. The original building around the reception area is old and retains the original Spanish architectural style and feel. However, the part of the building housing the accommodation has been given a very modern make over. The room we had was reasonably spacious and well equipped with designer lights and furnishing and power showers, the beds comfortable. But it was also very gloomy. The main drawback is that the windows only look out onto an inner atrium and therefore the only views are the windows of the rooms opposite. There is virtually no natural light. We felt as if we were in a rather luxurious cave or an inner cabin of a cruise ship. There was nothing to indicate we were in an old building in a traditional Spanish town. In short there was no sense of place. The Rector is also closely linked with a restaurant with a high reputation but we can't say if this is deserved as it is closed on Mondays, the night we happened to stay (not that the reception staff seemed entirely clear on this point as they booked us a table there). However there are a number of good restaurants around the main square, itself a great place to take an evening stroll and open air pre-dinner drinks. It is only about a gentle 10 minute walk from the Hotel. In many ways this is a perfectly pleasant Hotel which many people may like but given the gloomy rooms and lack of atmosphere our conclusion was it lacked that "special" quality to justify the room rates. We checked out the Parador which is only 5 minutes away, one of the beauties of old Almagro is that nothing is more than 10 minutes walk, and from what we saw bearing in mind we did not stay there, it would appear to be the better option."

"It is a 17th palace. Very nice, very well decorated. wide and well equipped rooms with TV, coffee shop ... They have a garage, although it is not big and in peak times there is no place, but it can be parked in nearby streets. The hotel is very comfortable and comfortable."

"This was on our route and made for a stopover. The hotel is nice enough, with a nice courtyard and the Church of San Carlos del Valle, but nothing to get excited about. The rooms are basic but clean. The restaurant was having a 38 Euro per person meal when we were there, so we drove to the nearby town, Valdepeñas, where there were other restaurant choices. If we were in that situation again we would go to Valdepeñas and stay there."

"Whenever we make hotel booking, we always ask for a quiet room. For some reason a family group were given rooms surrounding us and the walls were inadequate at keeping out the sounds of voices, shouting, singing, television, music, phone calls, etc, etc. The shower head/water pressure was without doubt the worst we have ever experienced. Th8s is a 3 Star Hotel and yet here was no cafe or restaurant open and no lounge area to sit in. The outdoor pool was closed and the surrounding patio was dirty and unkept. When we asked to move rooms we were told that the hotel was full and yet the car park was completely empty apart from our car. Also very few guests at breakfast. There was no facility to make coffee in our room. Our choice was either buy the inclusive breakfast (it is made clear only one coffee is included) or be charged for morning coffees. To be honest, there were 'better experience' coffee/breakfast bars nearby. The inclusive breakfast is simple and basic. On the plus side, the undercover parking was fairly convenient, except that it is necessary to telephone reception each time to ask them to open the door. A poor experience, unable to recommend."
