We had a wonderful room! Fantastic view of the gushing river and tweeting birds in the day! Great area for an easy walk in the nature park. Night star gazing of the open sky was a magical experience. Meals were well prepared - very home style and wholesome. The service staff were most kind and professional! Worth the effort to get to this location - we had a pickup and send off service as well!

We found this hotel when looking for somewhere to stay close to the mountains and the hiking trails along Old Nakasendo, such as Magome to Tsumago and the Torii pass. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed, although the interior feels a bit outdated. The lobby offered comfortable seats to relax together, some board games, and a machine with free hot and cold drinks. Both dinner and breakfast was included and served as a Japanes style multi course menu. This was a wonderful experience and something we really enjoyed! Our host was very helpful by introducing the dishes and explaining how and in what order to eat them. We also enjoyed the complimentary hot baths, which work similar to every other onsen we visited in Japan. This was a great way to relax in the afternoon after the hike. The hotel is a 15 minute drive from Kiso-Fukushima station (where all local and express trains stop). The complimentary hotel shuttle bus made it easy to get to the station in the morning and back to the hotel in the afternoon. If you already have your hiking boots on, it is also possible to walk to the hotel via a beautiful scenic road from the local train station Harano in around 60 minutes. The hotel staff was great, very friendly, and doing everything to make our stay comfortable despite not everyone being fluent in English. For example, on our way to the station the shuttle bus driver noticed that there was a youth sumo wrestling competition held in a large tent along the road, and stopped for a few minutes to give us a chance to enjoy it.

Although we booked 2 nights at Onyado Tsutaya, we were told at check-in they were full and we had been given a room in a separate building ”Annex Hatago” (across the street and a few doors down from the actual ryokan.) Given there was an actual name for the separate building, we should have been informed upon booking that we were staying elsewhere and not in the ryokan itself as we had booked. As this information was not relayed to us until check-in, we felt completely misled right from the start. If you've ever stayed in a ryokan, it is all about the atmosphere, hospitality and food. The annex is a non-descript block facing a parking lot. It has no atmosphere and it is hard to experience anything but aggravation walking up/down 2 flights of metal stairs on the outside of the building (no elevator in the annex) and across the street for dinner on a cold night in your yukata. We are fully able to climb the stairs (we walked two different sections of the Nakasendo during our stay here) - it just wasn't what we expected given the hotel indicates it has an elevator. I was also surprised to be left a placard informing us that rooms were not serviced when staying more than one night. While I am all for a green environment, daily service to the room is usually a guest's option rather than a lodging's mandate. Summing it up, no, I would not recommend a stay here as it felt like a bait and switch. Having said that, this is the first time in all my years of traveling throughout the world that I've ever experienced such deception when booking a room.

I traveled to Tsutaya with my husband and teenager. It was truly one of the best parts of our two week-trip to Japan. The countryside there is so beautiful. Our room had a deck with a view of the mountains and fields of the Kaida Plateau and the main sitting room also has chairs outside where you can gaze at the landscape. There's plenty to do in and near the hotel: the onsen onsite is incredible, there's a Kiso horse preservation area nearby, and beautiful hiking trails. The hotel has bikes for people to use. We had a car and drove to Magome (about an hour) for the day. We also saw a toy museum and other onsens nearby that you could visit The food was bountiful, delicious, and beautifully prepared and presented. And the people couldn't have been more welcoming! I could easily spend a lot of time there!

The staff really went above and beyond to make two ignorant Canadian tourists feel extremely welcome at a traditional Japanese Ryuken. Though there was a small language barrier, we never felt that we could not communicate our needs. The hot and cold onsen was very refreshing after walking post towns along the Nakasendo Way. The river next to the hotel made for a relaxing experience and deep sleep. Somehow, I missed the option when booking to select the dinner option, there is really no other food options in the area, and the clerk (owner) said he would put a 'simple meal' together for us for a small charge which we found acceptable. The kaiseki that followed was some of the best and most authentic Japanese food we experienced in our two weeks in Japan. The woman serving us was an absolute gem and the cat that ran the establishment was adorable. Our room was very comfortable and had a nice sitting area with a view of the river. Only points of contention would be that that it's a little out of the way if you don't have a car, but is conveniently accessable by bus with ~10 minute walk. The facilities are a little dated, the onsen is discoloured, but I assume that is from the natural minerals. There was a stale smell (smoke) in the rooms which is a bit off-putting to non-smokers. It would appear smoking is allowed in the facility which might be a plus to some.
