Hard to know where to start! This was the worst experience we have ever had with a hotel. I should have known better when they couldn't even be bothered to answer the email I sent them two weeks before we arrived! The photos looked nice and the price was good however, and so we decided to go for it. On arrival at the hotel the door was locked even though it was only late afternoon. It took 5 minutes until someone let us in and they just looked confused as to why were there! The place was in semi-darkness, and the reception desk had nothing on it or around it to indicate that it was used. They had no idea about our booking. They wanted us to pay in cash (never experienced that before in a hotel) and when I told them we had no cash on us and I wanted to pay by card they disappeared into the back with no explanation, took 5 minutes, came back and said had to go next door to get paper for the machine. We then paid and imagined we would get a key and told where our room was, but no such luck. By this time we had been there 25 minutes. The 'receptionist' then asked separately for the city tax in cash. We had already told them that we had no cash. They then proceeded to call someone (the owner?) on the phone - they went into the adjoining dining room - that also looked semi-deserted, with boxes piled up. They left us standing in the hallway with no idea of what was going on the entire time. By this time we had been waiting to get to our room for nearly 40 minutes after travelling all the way from the U.K. by car. When I made payment, I asked about breakfast and was told that breakfast was not included although on the website it says that it is. The hotel looked and felt abandoned. After 45 minutes of waiting in a darkened hallway with no indication of what was going on, we finally lost our patience and told the 'receptionist' that we were leaving. He looked alarmed and said something about the payment being in GBP which could be a problem, which made no sense as when I had paid, it had gone through and I can see on my account that the hotel have taken the payment (for nothing). We finally gave up waiting and went to another hotel which cost us double what we were expecting to pay (plus the payment to Cavalier Hotel that we had already paid). I emailed the hotel to complain politely and ask for a refund, and surprise, surprise, I have had no response, and no apology after 3 days. The whole experience was very upsetting - we received no explanation, no apology, and no offer of refund. There are lots of other hotels in Bruges so give this one a miss!
