The Birdham at Bembridge

Four of us went on Sunday, 6pm, 3 people ordered Sunday roast and when we asked for 1 of these to be a small plate at £13, told not available even though it said it on the menu. So ordered 1 main meal, plus 3 large roast plates at £17.25 each, of which 2 x beef, 1 lamb. Our food arrived with two small vegetable portions of cabbage and carrots, so we asked for the brocolli and cauliflower cheese which we saw other diners eating, but waitress never came back to the table. Asked waitor again for it, who checked then said it had run out, so we had to ask him for more vegetables, rather than actually being offered them. Finally we realised we were also missing the yorkshire puddings but when we asked for these, also told these had run out. Very disappointing that we asked if roasts were still on as we did realise 6pm was late. Yes we were informed, so we went ahead and ordered, with no explanation that some vegetables and yorkshire puddings had actually run out. Plates just put on the table with no admittance to what was missing. So we paid for 3 x £17.25 roast meals with items missing - no apology, no offer such as maybe dropping 1 pint of beer off the bill, nothing at all. Really disappointing that this is seen to be OK for customers to pay full price for 90% of a meal.

We stayed here at Easter for a week. We don't normally stay in pub/b&b's and never realised it was until we arrived. We stayed in a double superior room and we were very happy with it. We had read reviews about cracks in walls etc but it is an old building and it did not affect the enjoyment of the room. There was plenty of space and the bed was very comfortable, probably one of the best nights sleep I have had in a b&b. The bathroom was well layed out with a light above the mirror. Breakfast was excellent although the cooked breakfast was a bit slow to come out. The food in the restaurant was very good and we ate in there most nights. The staff were very friendly and although we had a small problem with some plumbing noise they did what they could to fix it. The only downside was the toiletries. They advertise complementary toiletries but the day we arrived we had one small sachet of shower gell and this was not replaced until the day before we were going home. They should not advertise this if they are not going to supply them. Two sachets between 2 of us for 7 days, hardly complimentary. Luckily enough I always take some in case. This aside I would highly recommend this place.

We booked this establishment because it said it had a large double bed. On entering the room, the bed was big and took up the whole room. Bed was uncomfortable (just a spring mattress) and you kept rolling towards the edge (not sure if because of the very uneven floor?) there was nowhere to put your things, a dressing table type unit with stool had the tea making items on it. The bathroom was big but nowhere to store your things no unit nothing. The towel rail was slightly loose so we didn’t want to hang a wet towel after use on it in case it came away from the wall. Behind the toilet it was dirty, overflow cover missing on the bath, and the light above the bath needed a new bulb. The whole lighting wasn’t very bright but it was ok for the time we were there. The room is extremely hot even with the bathroom windows and room window open (they only open a fraction) even with the fan on. The building is old so very creaky, so we heard every footstep from the room above, and the bathroom tap when used it sounded like it was in our room! We were offered another room but my husband was asleep and I didn’t want to disturb him, so we stayed in the room and as we were only there 2 nights. The cooked breakfast was nice and cooked fresh to order so we expected it to come from the kitchen hot, but it wasn’t. We had dinner one night and had the skewers, these were very nice. Overall staff are very nice, and location is good just a little attention to some tired areas of the room and bathroom including the window frame is needed plus a more comfortable mattress would really be good.
