On a journey to the Ella, Bandarawela, Haputhale, Ohiya, Horton plains area or beyond the most popular spot to break journey for refreshments was undoubtedly the Belihul oya rest house. This beautiful spot by the Belihul oya stream still has the heritage looks with the old building with a history standing majestic and the grand vintage style service to visitors. We had the opportunity to stop for lunch and enjoyed the Sri Lankan meal they served. We observed that the natural tree and shrub lined catchment on the opposite bank of the stream has been thinned out exposing cleared land and some new buildings on that side spoiling the view and natural beauty of the stream and its environment that existed before. The Rest house had dwelling facility with many bed rooms for overnight visitors and also an access to the stream for a fresh water dip, chill and fun. This is a Rest house that should be preserved while maintaining the inherent charm, but it needs to modernise specially the visitors’ toilets by properly designing them with larger space inside each toilet cubicle. Space has not been provided in the currently available toilet to shut the door after entering. Cannot understand why designers compromise with space and cause so much inconvenience in a place with ample land mass. Visitors break journey to use these facilities at a landmark like this for refreshing themselves and to have a good snack or meal or an overnight stay.
