The ingredients used in Elisabeth Sault and Christiane Fournier’s cuisine are all sourced locally – part of the ‘Pays Gourmand Charter’. The ladies are welcoming, the service is good and the food is simple yet flavoursome. The ‘estouffade de l’agneau du pays’ (braised shoulder and neck of lamb) is served with boiled potatoes, aubergines and tomatoes… just like a stew. The ‘planche du moment’ consists of raw vegetables, gazpacho, leek gratin with Roquefort cheese and walnuts, a slice of omelette with herbs… all very tasty. The terrace is a very pleasant outside dining space. The dining room is in the rustic alpine style, the walls decorated with old photographs and various rural artefacts. All very charming. There is no music – bliss! Located in the heart of Allos, a delightful village in the Verdon Valley in the Southern Alps, this restaurant really is worth the detour. I cannot comment on the hotel as I have never stayed there.
