Sunset Beach Hotel

My partner and I stayed here from 17th - 24 January 2012. We stayed in one of the bungalows in the lovely well kept gardens. I wasn't expecting too much, as it is a poor country, but I was very surprised. The rooms were clean and well kept, the showers worked fine, not as good as at home, but much better than I had expected. Breakfast was great, with loads of juice, fruit, toast etc, not too mention the freshly cooked pancakes and omelettes, what a lovely setting too, with breakfast tables overlooking the stream. Very friendly hotel, not as big or busy at the Kombo Beach next door, but much more our style. We had an excellent stay at the Sunset Beach and would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful place to chill out.

Me and my husband have just arrived back from 9 days at sunset beach and had a lovely time! We had Bungalow c1 which was in a good location, rooms are clean and the maid did a good job everyday, fresh sheets & towels daily. The pool is clean and the hotel is right on the beach. The breakfast is brilliant, everything you could want and a beautiful view to go with it! You need to ask the pancake lady for boiled eggs we only realised this in the last few days, we also forgot our adapter but you can rent one for D100 from reception. The food in the hotel is lovely, a little more expensive than in other places but thats to be expected. I had a massage and pedicure at the spa which was really good. There is a taxi rank across from the hotel and a bird tour place, theres a guide called Lamin Camara, he is brill! You do get some hassel from people wanting to sell you trips/memory cards/bracelets but just say no and they will leave you alone. There is a creek just out front of the hotel on the beach but 9 out of ten times you can paddle accross to walk left towards some great beach bars. It was our first time in Gambia and not our last. We will be back very soon to Sunset beach!

I have just come back from Sunset Beach and I have to say it is by far the best hotel in the area, we had a walk around a few of the others nearby, Kombo beach and Bungalow Beach and Sunset is definitely the best. The staff couldn't do enough for you, especially Paul and Celia around the pool/bar area. There was a bit of a mix up when we arrived as there were no rooms but that wasn't their fault, they tried their hardest at reception to get us a room which they did finally 2 days later ...(travel republic's fault will not be using them again)... we got an upgrade to a seaview appartment and free aircon, not that that was needed as it was pretty cool in an evening which was lovely. A few tips for you, never say it is your first time in gambia as you will get hassled a lot, a few people on here have said if you firmly say no they will leave you alone, this is NOT true, whereever you go you get hassled to buy fruit or nuts or a bird guide or taxis, you are better off saying you have friends that live in Gambia that sort all your needs out. If you go to the monkey park you are told you will need a guide if you want to see any monkeys, this is also not true, there are plenty of monkeys to see and its a lovely 2 hour walk around the park. It is an eye opener. we met Lamin Manika at the hotel who did a lot for us so we went to his house to meet his family and neighbours and that is a true eye opener, we took sweets for the children, bought books pens etc and a large bag of rice which will feed the whole family for over a month. Overall an enjoyable holiday in beatiful settings but all of the hassle did take the edge off it for me. Visisted 28th Jan -8th Feb 2012.

For a first timer in Gambia, this was definitely the perfect hotel. Upon arriving, I was shown to my Bungalow room-dated, but adequate-where the guy apologised for the sound of the waves. Yes, I was on the front and in the morning, just WOW, I was literally 1 meter from the beach. A lovely start to the holiday. Is it paradise? No, but it's pretty awesome. Loved this hotel as it wasn't huge and apart from the odd day, no kids 😁 It's perfectly placed, about half way to the Monkey Park in one direction-also the main strip-and Cape Point in the other, which is near Crocadile Park. Also, for bird watchers, just outside/to the side, is a known creek-which is one of the stops on most bird watching tours. The food was much better than expected, to be honest. Breakfast good n lunch was freshly cooked-the chef was new and he definitely impressed. For the evening meal, I must admit, I didn't have many as I eat really late, but the odd ones I went to, they were fine. Reet, entertainment-the evening ones which I saw were great-though I only went to a couple. A lot were, I think, Local Tribes, and they were fab and fascinating-very impressive, some of them. Yes, they go round after with the tip box-awkward at first, but it's the Gambian way. Day entertainment-meh is all I've got to say. They sat down on their phones and didn't create the buzz you'd normally expect from 'The Animation Team'. Nice enough, but it could be much better. Onto drink-pretty good. Had all the usual , and even though the tour operator had emailed to say Diet Coke was in short supply, it was served, no problem. The wine was nice , and things like milkshakes were ace. The pool was really nice and adequate as the hotel wasn't too full. Had a few nice swims in there. The beach-and I love the beach-was really nice-though it was almost spoiled by being mithering. You have to be firm and, unfortunately, sometimes harsh. Though I must admit the security guys were fab and made the experience much better. Overall, I loved this hotel and will miss that Sea Front room. I'd definitely recommend this hotel-though it has gone up by a grand for the same holiday next year, so won't be returning until it's back to within my budget.

I enjoyed my stay at the Sunbeach hotel, I am already planning to go back. The receptionist, the bar and kichen staff were warmly welcoming and they always have a smile whilst catering to our wants, needs and demands. I would advice any potential visitor to Gambia to give them your stay oh did I forget to say the food was yum yum tasty indeed.

The staff are the best ever, willing to cater to your every need. They are friendly, supportive and are always smiling, even when they are faced with difficult challenges. They are the best. From the Reception Desk (Mousa), to the Porters, the Chefs (Chef Lamin and the rest of the team) in the kitchen, Bar staff (Rashida & Arouna), Housekeepers (Mohammed) - they are second to none and always go above and beyond. I became unwell halfway through my stay at the hotel and they catered to my every wish. Making me special meals to help me on my recovery - I cannot thank them enough.
