My father and I stayed here 1 night April 9 after our Kilimanjaro climb, left our luggage for a few days while we went on safari, then stayed 3 more nights April 13 through 16 as a layover while we waited on the required covid test results. The room was large, clean and comfortable, the property is quiet, secured, with a beautiful garden that has trees heavy with fruit. We were greeted with fresh juice, and the light breakfast consisted of coffee, tea, juice, fresh fruit, chapati, sweet potatoes, porridge and more. The property is within easy walking distance of several restaurants and the clock tower area. All the employees we encountered were friendly, professional, and helpful. The highlight of our stay was our time with Hamza, who does the cultural tourism programs for the homestay. He was excited to show us around and became a friend. He walked us through the COVID testing and payment process at Mt Meru hospital which was VERY confusing to us (book ahead of time, hard to find, payment must be done via a bank not on site, our results took 52 hours), accompanied us to the natural history museum with a student docent who made the experience so much richer, helped us navigate the vendors at the masaai market, and took us to the cultural center. The next day he took us to the Chagga village of Ngurdoto to spend the day with the Umangu women's group. These ladies greeted us with song, showed us their bee keeping, honey press, soap making, garden, coffee roasting, fish ponds, and shared a meal with us. We were able to try so many foods and fruits, and even a sip of banana beer. Hamza participated and provided valuable translation for us. The next day we went to a glass blower that employs disabled workers, and the main roaster of the area to buy EXCELLENT coffee to take home. Having Hamza organize these adventures and accompany us made the experience so much richer than if we had struck out on our own, and it was so convenient through the homestay. I highly recommend a stay at themi valley, and spending some time with Hamza, it was wonderful having a local excited to share his town and the local culture with us.
