I decided to surprise my wife on Valentine's day weekend with a stay at Nobu hotel followed by a stay at the Langham. I booked a stay at the Langham using Chase Luxury Hotel and Resort collection. I booked a junior suite, hoping for an upgrade. However due to a busy weekend, I was understandably not given one. After booking the hotel, I called them to book a reservation for afternoon tea with Wedgewood. I also separately ordered a set of macaroons to be brought to the room after we checked in, and a cake which was supposed to be brought just before check out. Michelle Cheung from the Private Kitchen reached out to me in advance to confirm the tea choices and dietary restrictions. She accurately captured all the dietary preferences and customized the afternoon tea menu accordingly. Very impressive. On the day of check-in, we got to the hotel and were impressed by its lovely decor. Check-in experience wasn't that great. The person behind the reception desk appeared to be not as friendly or warm. Check out experience was not too far from that. But it's OK. Front desk folks must be tired showing their warms to all guests on a 80% occupancy day. We were given a couple of water bottles upon arrival. Thank you. We then proceeded to our junior suite and my wife was really excited to see it! It was large, with floor to ceiling windows on two sides, views were OK, but it was still nice. It had a bit of a dated feel to it, but I was happy as my wife was happy. The macaroons weren't placed in the room prior to our arrival, as I had requested, but I made a quick phone call to the kitchen and they showed up shortly after. Due to Pandemic related dine-in restrictions, the only option was to have afternoon tea in the privacy of our room. It turned out to be a very good experience as we were able to enjoy it in the privacy of our room with zero pressure and were able to pace ourselves and enjoy every single thing. My wife said it was one of the best afternoon tea that she had (other top choices include Peninsula and The Allis -if you were wondering). The private kitchen staff brought a roll-away dining table into the room and set it up for us - that was really nice!! We were fairly full afterwards and for dinner we ordered pasta and chips+Guac. I did not particularly enjoy either of them given how full we were. We did get complementary chocolate covered strawberries, which we did enjoy. Next morning we went to the chuan spa for a couple's massage. Before we left the room, I placed order for breakfast to be delivered closer to our estimated time of return. It is advised to get to your Spa appointment 15-30 minutes in advance so you can get a tour, enjoy the facilities, etc. We were scheduled at the time the spa opens, so we weren't actually able to go to the Spa prior to the appointment start time using our key cards but someone in security helped us out. The massage was fantastic. We also bought some products from them. Addi

As we are counting down to our 12/11 49th starting 4 months out with 9 trips, The W joined in our playtime by offering (for $) upgrade to WOW suite. It was truly WOW’ing with a full view of Lake Michigan and a long bathtub for Bubble baths. Cleared out for Covid, upon request they brought up frig, coffee maker, wine glasses, plates, and utensils. They were fully at our service. Even when we checked out, we heard “Happy Anniversary.” What a lovely experience at a beautiful and comfortable hotel. Thanks, W!

I’ll start by saying I debated for hours between The Peninsula and The Langham before making a reservation. When I checked in the doorman wasn’t overly helpful and the front desk was a little curt. No one provided an explanation about the property and services and none of the COVID protocols listed were followed. The property and rooms are attractive though it could definitely use a little TLC. There were gouges in the wood workspace, scuffs around the baseboards, and scratches in the leather tech valet. The bigger problem, however, was cleanliness. My first room was not cleaned properly between guests. The amenities were half empty and there was a yet-to-dry moisturizer thumbprint on the bathroom vanity. There was also noticeable debris on the workstation glass and phone. The tech worked well for a hotel, but the bedside tablets were Galaxy A models from 2014 that clearly needed to be replaced. The battery would drain 20-30% in standby mode when not on the charger. Chromecast reset itself every half hour and the remote in the workstation drawer wouldn’t charge; the last is an issue the housekeeper should be checking, especially before putting it on the nightstand during turndown. I get things happen but, at $500 a night, those problems should be few and far between. Extensive room wear is not acceptable at a luxury property; put it out of service and make the necessary repairs. Don’t put guests in a beat up rooms. The biggest problem by far, however, was service. Room service just left my order right inside the door after asking is they should set it up in the room; as someone who had back surgery a few weeks ago, pushing a heavy 35ft from the door to the table wasn’t an easy task (nor enjoyable when you’re paying $100 for lunch). When I’d call the front desk or concierge with basic questions there wasn’t any urgency or even the thought about going the extra mile. I asked where I could find the toothpaste I like; there was an immediate “I don’t know” without any type of “I’ll check into it” follow up—by the way, I found the toothpaste literally across the street so it wouldn’t have been hard for them to grab it and charge my room. Service was an ongoing issue though. I’d use PenChat and it would take 10 minutes for another “I don’t know” type of reply. The phone would ring a half dozen times before it was picked up, and when I tried to call down at check out, I was put on hold for eight minutes and decided to just carry my stuff downstairs on my own—when I got to the desk, there was literally no one waiting. Not really the service I expected. You can tell when a manager is passionate about their property; Staff is happy, service is top notch, and the property is pristine. The Peninsula was none of these. It is in dire need of change. I wouldn’t expect this poor of service and lax standards at a hotel that costs $100 a night; at $500, it’s simply inexcusable. I clearly made the wrong choice on this trip and will
